Maybe, but first...

Wendy had met Veronica at a bar after a truly devastating day at work about three weeks ago. However, to say that Wendy met Veronica is a bit misleading- as it was more Veronica introduced Wendy to Veronica.

Right from the get-go, Veronica seemed deadset on being Wendy’s friend. It was a bit odd, but Wendy didn’t really have any friends- all of the friends she used to have went off to get boyfriends and start families, the only social circle she had were her coworkers, and she was adamant about keeping those relationships professional.

“I’ve never seen you around these parts, stranger!” Veronica said the night she met Wendy.

“Yeah...I don’t like to make a habit of drinking, but today called for it.”

“What happened?”

“Just work things...I cannot imagine a worse, more humiliating day than today!”

Wendy eventually spilled the beans to a surprisingly intrigued Veronica- it felt nice actually having someone to talk to that it was easy to ignore the fact that she didn’t know this woman.

The relief she felt talking to Veronica provided a reason to order another drink. And then another. And then another. She has sworn that she would never be as publicly indecent as she was that night.

She eventually got properly sloshed and she told Veronica about her entire plight- the envy she has for her friends with their boyfriends and their families, about why she doesn’t date. The odd thing was, when she was telling this to Veronica- she just smiled and nodded as though Wendy was merely confirming what Veronica already knew.

Every subsequent time Wendy saw Veronica, she realized that she knew very little about her- and intended to find out more, but Veronica was very good about switching the subject to ask about Wendy.

Wendy couldn’t keep anything from Veronica. She always knew how to get her to open up.
