Mary Thomas and Mary Emilia walk through a door

Mary Thomas waited for her co-sister to admit that there was no such thing as a ghost. But instead of the chubby little Mary Emilia, a disembodied voice answered that seemed to come from everywhere.

"Are you really sure about that?"

"Who's there? Show yourself!"

"But you can already see me. I'm the house."

"Nonsense. Houses can't talk."

"And yet I do speak. If I can speak even though you don't believe it, then there can be ghosts even though you don't believe in them."

"Oh, give me a break. I don't believe anything I haven't seen with my own eyes."

"Very well, you asked for it. See yourself."

Directly behind the two nuns, a previously hidden passageway swung open with a ear-splitting squeak of rusty hinges.

" So enter ... the spirit world!"

Without hesitation, Mary Thomas stepped through the newly opened door. It was impossible to scare her with these cheap tricks. Her co-sister followed her much less confidently. As soon as they were both on the other side, the portal slammed shut with a crash.

Mary Emilia jumped in shock. She looked back fearfully.

"Where has it gone?"

" What?"

"Well, the door."

The taller girl followed her gaze and had to admit that there was no trace of the doorway they had passed seconds before. Knocking and feeling around didn't reveal anything more. The wall seemed to be seamless and solid at this place.

"What are we going to do now," whined the shorter girl tearfully.

"It's all just sleight of hand, semi-transparent mirrors, light effects and hidden cables. Even if we wandered around this house for hours, there's not the slightest chance of coming across a ghost. Let's go back outside and make sure we catch up with the others."

"Yes, I'd love to. I'm starting to think it's a bit creepy here. But where's the exit?"

Mary Thomas had to admit with dismay that the room they were stranded in didn't actually have a door. Nor did it have a window. The only thing that interrupted the walls, which were covered in peeling wallpaper, was a row of almost blind mirrors that extended down to the floor.
