Chapter 15
by Forcy
What happens next?
Martha shows Amy the rest of the gifts she got from the Torchwood team before they leave
A/N: For those that don't recall an adventure that involved Martha and Ianto from the Torchwood Three team in Switzerland, that's probably because it didn't happen in the spin-off show during Martha's crossover appearances, but on the Lost Souls Audio Drama. Just wanted to mention that here for the record, in case you were wondering where that reference came from. And yes, Martha has also canonically met the major former companion from the Classic Who era, Sarah Jane Smith, as well.
With that out of the way, happy reading!
A few minutes later, Amy looked up from the bed when Martha pulled down a mid-sized wooden box from the top shelf of her closet.
“You know,” Amy said idly, “you’re very tidy for someone who’s survived alien invasions. If it were me, I’d have old monster teeth in jam jars and random alien trophies in my knicker drawer.”
Martha smirked as she set the box on the floor and knelt beside it. “Oh, I have the weird things—just stored alphabetically.”
Amy peeked over the side of the bed, then propped herself up on her elbows. “What’s in that one?”
"More useful and unique gadgets that I gained from my friends at Torchwood, UNIT, or from other former companions of the Doctor, Martha explained.
She opened the box and showed her bracelet before setting it aside and picking up a metal case no bigger than a paperback. “This one’s from Owen, also from Torchwood Three. He was a bit of a grump while I knew him, but honestly, he had better reasons than most for that," Martha added, a sad and uneasy look on her face that made Amy think she was remembering an adventure that had turned south really fast.
She raised an eyebrow at that, but Martha didn't elaborate, so she didn't ask. Then, she flipped open the case to reveal three slim, color-coded injectors nestled in foam. “But he was also a genius at making do with the alien tech he had access to in Torchwood. He called this his ‘In Case the Universe Tries to Kill You’ kit.”
Each injector had a handwritten label in untidy scrawl. The case lid had a small engraving:
"In case UNIT tries to get you killed on the job. Again. — O.H."
Amy snorted. “Oh, I like him.”
“Don’t encourage him. Even posthumously.”
“You kept it?”
“Of course I did.” Martha closed the case gently. “He died saving people. This was his way of looking out for me one more time.”
Amy was quiet for a moment, visibly moved. “You were really close to this team, huh?”
“I was. In a way, I still am.”
A beat. Then Amy asked, a bit hesitantly, “Torchwood. That’s…the organization the Doctor mentioned to me once, come to think of it. Something about soldiers, alien research for the British Monarchy, and future planets?”
Martha nodded, reaching back into the box. “They’ve had many faces. Good ones, awful ones. Secret, messy, brilliant. And yes, according to the Doctor, they eventually spread across the galaxy after human civilization expands beyond the Sol system. Personally, though, I never met them in the future the last time I traveled with the Doctor," She explained. "Instead, I worked occasionally with the Cardiff branch of Torchwood Three from my own era. Captain Jack Harkness ran it. You’d like him,” She added with a fond and amused smile.
“Oh? Bit of a flirt, I take it?”
Martha gave her a sly look. “Flirt is putting it mildly. He flirts like it’s a biological function.”
Amy laughed. “Yeah, sounds like a legend.”
“He is. And in more ways than one."
She pulled out a sleek leather folio next, embossed and stylish.
“This one’s from Ianto. Jack’s partner. He wasn’t the most talkative, but he was always prepared. Gave me this after the last time we teamed up, during a mission to CERN, Switzerland. Look.”
She unzipped the case, revealing a beautifully organized set of slim tools, a folded multi-function card, and a Torchwood ID labeled “Dr. Martha Jones – Provisional Level 1 Access.”
Amy leaned in. “You lot really had levels? Like MI6 but with aliens?”
“Pretty much. And Ianto once repaired an alien translator using parts from a cappuccino machine. He was brilliant in his own way.”
Tucked into a side pocket was a photo—Martha and Ianto sitting on the steps outside the Large Hadron Collider, holding takeaway cups, both mid-laugh. On the back, a note in crisp handwriting:
“For your next impossible mission. You always make it look easy. — Ianto”
Amy blinked. “He wrote that?”
“He didn’t say much, but when he did…it mattered.”
She slid the photo back into place with practiced care. Then, from a smaller inner compartment, she retrieved a perfectly ordinary-looking lipstick tube.
Amy quirked a brow. “That's your emergency glam supply?”
Martha grinned. “Actually, Gwen, another member of Torchwood Three, helped me build this. Well, I technically had the idea after visiting Sarah Jane Smith, another former companion of the Doctor, but she helped me refine it. You know she’s got a hi-tech sonic screwdriver disguised as a lipstick?”
“No way!” She exclaimed.
“Yeah," Martha assured her as she chuckled. "Sarah Jane is a legend in her own right. So, I basically told Gwen during one of our girls' night out in a bar that I really wanted something similar—sleek, subtle, and stylish—but not necessarily as multipurpose as a sonic screwdriver itself, since reverse engineering such versatile Time Lord technology with the means at our disposal was asking a bit much without the Doctor's direct assistance," She acknowledged. "Still, she pleasantly surprised me with the results. ”
She clicked it open—no lipstick, just a slender internal rod with a faintly glowing tip.
“Low-level energy discharge,” Martha explained. “Stuns most humanoids for ten seconds. Useful when diplomacy fails.”
Amy gave a low whistle. “That’s proper James Bond, that is. This Gwen made that for you?”
“For Christmas. Wrapped it in a bow and everything.”
Amy smirked. “Did she tell you not to use it on this Jack person?”
“Oh, she definitely told me to use it on Jack.”
They both laughed. Then, finally, Martha reached into the bottom of the box and pulled out a dark glass bottle sealed with an elaborate, metallic stopper.
Amy’s eyes lit up. “Ooh, what’s that? It looks posh.”
Martha held it up, letting the light catch the subtle shimmer of the liquid inside.
“Captain Jack gave me this the last time we saw each other. Said it was one of his ‘emergency morale boosters.’”
Amy sat up cross-legged, feeling interested. “Is it what I think it is?”
“It’s wine,” Martha confirmed, “but not just any wine. It came from a Chula shipwreck—Jack claimed it crash-landed into the sea between Ireland and Britain sometime during the 20th century. The drink is laced with temporary nanogenes that adapt the taste to your tongue.”
“So…it tastes like the best wine you’ve ever had?”
“Exactly," Martha said with a nod. "Expertly tailor-made just for you on the spot and for your tastes."
Amy felt stunned. “That is so stupidly romantic. And kind of creepy. But mostly romantic. What a worthy gift from a major flirt!”
Martha chuckled, twirling the bottle in her hand. “Jack said to save it for something worth celebrating.”
Amy met her eyes, warmth blooming in her smile. “Well…you are running off again across time and space with the Doctor after agreeing to join his harem and bear his children. That seems worth toasting.”
Martha grinned in response. “True, and the sooner we enjoy it, the better. After all, we can't drink **** while actually pregnant!”
Amy nodded emphatically. “Exactly! I think that the Doctor will want to celebrate our fresh new sister-wife bond, and since this happens to be a bottle meant to be enjoyed by two people, it’s perfect timing for us to share it. Want to open it now, or shall we just head to the TARDIS and celebrate in style?” She asked, her eyes gleaming with lust and excitement.
Martha grinned. “Well, I was going to explain what the story is behind the last item that I will be bringing with me, but I suppose that can wait. TARDIS it is."
Amy chuckled and helped her carry a few bags. "Lead the way, my gorgeous sister-wife."
They giggled as they headed to the living room. Then, seeing that the Doctor must already be inside the TARDIS, Amy opened the door before turning back to her. "Ready to begin this new chapter of your life, Martha?" She asked softly.
Martha glanced around the house for a long moment. Amy knew that Martha had enjoyed her time here, however brief, back when she was still married to Mickey. But she suspected that those memories already seemed like a lifetime ago, given the new and expanded depths of her feelings of devotion for their beloved Doctor and his new mission that will require him to breed her too. It takes one to know one, after all. And sure enough, before too long, she nodded without a trace of regret in her eyes.
"Yes, I am ready," Martha confirmed. "Let's go."
And with that, she took Amy's hand, the redhead smiling as she helped her get inside.
Well, Martha is officially back in the TARDIS. Now, should she first get more intimately familiar with her new sister-wife or should she show her beloved Doctor how much she wants him to breed her first?
