Or rather the festival held at the Grange. There are two motorcycles parked in front of Mandy's house. One is Deenie's new-to-her wheels, the other is an old touring bike with panniers decorated with faded patches and held together with repair tape. The rider is a youngish man with a blond beard, wearing beat-up old leathers. Must be one of the Grange crew.

You hear voices raised inside the house. Mandy and Deenie having a disagreement. You'd hoped they'd have a couple quiet weeks for Deens to settle in and make plans.

Now and then you wonder how things would be with Deenie and her mom, if Mandy had managed to keep Mary from getting her claws into you. Maybe you and Mandy could have given Deenie a younger brother or sister to be her ally or go-between with her mom. The motorcycle fellow looks around at you as you walk up, cane in hand, still a bit unsteady on your healing leg.

"Fine! I'll just go!" Deenie calls out.

The screen door bangs shut behind her as she comes out, hauling an under-packed duffel bag.

"Kevin, let's go," Deenie tells the fellow. "Brian?"

"Deens," you say. "How can I help?"

"You can fuck some sense into my mother," Deenie tells you. She puts the underpacked duffel bag on the rack behind her motorcycle saddle and ties it down with some hook-ended elastic cords.

"Deenie, that's not like you. C'mon, let's..."

"I said what I said," Deenie tells you. She starts the motorcycle. "Let's go, Kevin."

The man starts his motorcycle and leads off. Deenie follows him.

Mandy stands in the door and watches them go, her arms crossed in front of her chest, her face streaked with angry tears.

Not the first time you've seen that look on Mandy's face about Deenie.

The rumble of the motorcycle engines fades into the distance.

"Mandy," you greet her. Almost your wife. Your lover for twenty and more years. Quietly, only at her home. Your wife Mary's shiftmate and lover, for almost as long. "Grab my toolbox?"

Mandy takes you by the wrist. "Just come inside."

Well, it's not like you didn't come here for that reason.
