Chapter 21
Talking to Christie
Making a Promise
Amber rushed into Christie's room, slamming the door behind her. "Before you say anything," she started, " I don't know for sure how any of this works". She stepped shakily to Christie's bed, flopping down next to her friend. "I'm just making guesses on what I've felt."
Christie nodded quietly, waiting for Amber to continue.
"Back in there... in the church, something happened to me. It was like I was seeing how 'righteous' everyone was. You know, halos, glowing lights, all that shit. It was TOO bright. Like staring at the sun or something, y'know? I felt all burny and weird, and like I'd throw up or catch fire or something, and I felt like if any of the people there saw me they'd... I dunno. Do something terrible to me I guess? I felt sick and scared and in pain."
"But--"
"I'm not done yet." Amber shushed Christie, continuing on. "After a few minutes though, it settled down. It was like I had 'god vision' or something like that." Amber giggled. "I could tell EXACTLY how good each person in the room was. Some were super bright still, while others were --" Amber glanced pointedly at her friend and winked. "-- not really bright at all."
Christie giggled in response, reaching up her hand for a high-five. "Yeah, slap it for sin!" she laughed.
"NO, don't touch me!" Amber shouted, leaping up from the bed and startling Christie. "That's the other thing. After we got back, and you came in here, your mom... "Amber paused, unsure what to say. "Your mom started acting REALLY weird. She touched my arm, and... " Amber hesitated again, her face bright red. For some reason she really did not want to tell Christie what had happened. They had just made up, and Amber was sure that a fight would explode if she narrated how Christie's mother had tried to make a move on Amber -- not to mention what she had said about her own daughter. She continued again carefully: "...and it was like it influenced her or something. Like touching me made her act funny."
"What do you mean funny?" Christie prodded, her face growing slightly dark.
"Uhh..." Amber wasn't sure what to say. Should she lie? She never lied to Christie...
"She said some really mean things about you." That wasn't really a lie, Christie's mother HAD said something mean. It just... wasn't the whole truth.
"Oh." Christie paused for what felt like an eternity to Amber, who hoped Christie would read her beet-red face as awkwardness about the mean comment, rather than... anything else.
"Cool!" When Amber looked up, Christie was grinning, rubbing her hands together.
"What? Cool?"
"Shit yeah, cool! My best friend is a sexy demon!" Christie laughed, falling back onto the bed with arms outstretched. "You've got shitting dark powers and everything! This is so damn cool!"
Amber laughed, watching her friend's reaction. She didn't know why she ever worried with Christie. This girl was rock-solid. "Uh, yeah, cool! Seeing as you took that so well, there's actually something else I wanted to talk to you about."
"What's that?" Christie sat up.
Amber's face grew somehow even redder as she began to stammer. "W-well, there was the p-priest at church, y-yknow?"
Christie slowly began to grin, recognizing Amber's manner. This was just like when she had first told Christie about her crush. "Are you shitting kidding me Ambs?"
"W-what?"
"You've got the hots for a priest! HAH!" Christie clutched her stomach as she fell back on the bed, heaving with laughter.
"SHUT UP, NO I DO NOT!" Amber yelled, feeling incredibly embarrassed. "I don't have a CRUSH on him, I just..." she fought for the words. "Shut up Christie, STOP LAUGHING!!"
Christie slowly pulled herself together, wiping a tear from her eye. "Haha yeah, sure thing Ambs. Wanna tell me why you wanna fuck a priest? You know he's sworn to celibacy, right?" She winked at Amber.
"I don't wanna FUCK the priest!" Amber yelled, still feeling uncomfortable. "You didn't see it Christie, he was blinding during the service. But afterwards..." she gulped as she felt a rush of arousal. "He was completely BLACK. It was the hottest thing I've ever seen."
The smile slowly dropped from Christie's face as she listened to her friend talk. "You mean, like he's evil or something?" She asked. "And that makes you wanna...?"
"I want to corrupt him." Amber said intensely. "I want to turn him to evil, to stoke his shadow, to consume his darkness."
Christie whistled. "Holy damn, you're a full-on demon-y woman. I was joking earlier, but you're like... a succubus or something now, I don't know."
Amber pleaded earnestly with her friend. "You don't understand, this urge -- it's so strong. I can't fight it, I don't wanna fight it. I... I NEED him. I know what I need to do, just... would you help me? There's no one else I can ask about stuff like this!"
Christie looked at her friend, up and down. Her ugly old friend. Her awkward, ugly, completely loved, incredible Amber. Something had just shifted massively in her. Something dark had taken hold, something that shouldn't be there. She shouldn't help. She should really stop Amber from continuing down this path. It was wrong, it was sinister. But... Amber seemed to want it. Christie felt a wave of regret wash over her as she thought about how the weekend had gone. About what she had done, and how Amber had felt all these years. For once Amber wasn't the one on the outside, or the unwanted one. She was in control. Christie closed her eyes as she came to a decision. She couldn't take that from Amber. Not when this was the first time she'd seemed truly in control in her life.
"Fine." Christie muttered. She couldn't help but smile as she watched Amber jump up and down, squealing giddily. "I'll drive you to the church, and you can... do whatever 'your thing is'."
"YAY!" Amber screamed, hugging herself as she bounced. "I'm gonna have the prieeest, I'm gonna have the prieeest!" she began to chant in a singsong voice. She stopped suddenly as Christie continued.
"On one condition."
