Making New Friends!
Christina grabs Jillian's arm and drags her over to a group of other students. A strawberry blonde at the center is laughing and talking to what appears to be a couple, but they may just be friends? The gentleman, who looks too composed to just be a freshman, turns to the roommates as they walk up.
"Hello there! I haven't met you yet, I'm DeShawn." He's tall, with a broad chest and the hint of muscles pushing out from beneath a sharp button-down and a purple tie with a small metal tip clip in front with some Greek lettering. He grins, showing a bright smile that seems to sparkle with his brown eyes.
"And this here is Nala," he says as he's gesturing to a black woman next to him who is a beautiful as he is handsome. Her shoulders are bare from beneath her purple off the shoulder dress, matching DeShawn's tie, and show defined muscle. The pair exude confidence and athleticism.
"And I'm Becca!" The blonde smiles, a slight southern twang apparent in her voice. "I'm one of the TAs in the dorm, DeShawn and Nala are part of the Greek Ambassador program."
"Ambassador program?" Asks Christina.
"DeShawn here is with Beta Nu Omega and I'm with Koppa Omega Sigma." Nala begins to explain. "With the emphasis on racial reconciliation, while also protecting the school's historically black heritage, the school decided that it would be best if new non-Black students were integrated into only two main Greek groups. That way the other Black fraternities and sororities maintain their purity and strength."
"So why were your groups selected?" Christina's interest in anything that could help her get ahead is apparent.
"Oh, Beta Nu Omega is new, this is only it's second year. It was populated by the top recruits from the other fraternities, to ensure that new non-Black students were properly welcomed." Christina's eyes are drawn to the tie clip as DeShawn talks, she makes out the Greek letters B-N-O.
"Just like Koppa Omega Sigma," says Becca. "I rushed my freshman year and let me tell ya'll it was life changing."
"Our sisterhood is not for everyone." Nala runs her hand down DeShawn's back. "Be a gentleman and go get something for these ladies. We have energy drinks, Gullah State has an exclusive contract with a new company, Excel-lite. We get tons of free sample."
"Just water for me," says Christina. DeShawn leaves and out of the corner of her eye Christina swears she sees him grab Becca's ass, but the TA doesn't seem to react.
"I'm so sorry you can't meet the other TA, Grace, I have no idea where she wandered off to." Becca looks around through the crowd. "There's two of us for the freshman dorm. We look forward to helping guide you through your college experience."
"When do we get our library accounts activated?" Asks Christina. "I've already purchased my textbooks but in case I need to access anything additional.
"So eager!" Laughs Nala. "You should be enjoying your orientation first."
"Here you ladies go." DeShawn returns with an energy drink for Jillian and a cup of water for Christina. Jillian smiles, feeling like she can finally get a word in.
"And how about you, will I be seeing you around the dorm too? I mean you too ..." Jillian doesn't know why she can't stop looking at DeShawn. Well, he is attractive. He holds himself like the tribal warriors she remembers from Africa.
"Oh Nala will be around judging you girls to see if you have what it takes to join her sisterhood. I'm here to provide moral support and introduce myself to the freshman boys." He gestures towards the entrance. "Ochun Hall is the all girls freshman dorm, which is where we place all the non-Black girls to ease their cultural adjustment. It's right next to the all boys freshman dorm that has the non-Black guys, Legba Hall."
Feeling like she's gained all the information she will from the group, Christina begins to feel anxious being away from her books for so long. And she hasn't gotten a chance to ask Jillian about their textbook. But maybe she can bring it up with the upper class students? Maybe they've already taken the class too?
