Chapter 37
by wixxy
How are you gonna do this?
Make a run for it.
There's no time. You'll have to take the risk of alerting your adversary. You think where the nearest weapon inside the cabin is. Probably the carbine by the chair, or your brother's pistol on the shelf by the coat hooks. Ideally you'll get both, but the bigger weapon is definitely more appealing right now.
With a deep breath, you set off for the door, a burst of speed fuelled by adrenalin that has you charging across the short distance to your home. When you're halfway you hear a shout, and a warning shot. You do not slow down, and a second shot follows shortly after which you swear you feel whizz past just behind you.
But it doesn't matter, you're at the door, and you're inside just before a third round thuds into the solid wooden wall. You tumble forward to grab your carbine and, staying low so you won't show yourself at the window, begin to scurry towards the side door which is seldom opened, over by the cots where you and Todd sleep. You can hear someone shouting from outside, moving cautiously towards the cabin, making incoherent noises that you either don't understand or which are simply meaningless. This person sounds unhinged, but they are not out of control, as evidenced by their reasonably disciplined shooting and the way they are not simply charging towards you.
You're out of the side door by now, weapon at the ready, safety off and with a round in the chamber. It hits you in this moment that you might be about to kill a man. But your resolve is stiffened by the knowledge that if you don't, then you and your baby will be in very grave danger.
As you approach the corner of the cabin, you think quickly. He's likely to be crossing the space between the buildings, keeping low, and will have made a beeline for the only piece of cover in between which is a broad-trunked deciduous tree. Around its base is a thick carpet of dry leaves thanks to there being no recent rain, which means you should hear his footsteps unless he is exceptionally careful. He probably hasn't had time yet to cross more than halfway, which means that he'll either have **** but to run full tilt or dash back into cover if you lay a couple of shots in his general direction.
Without even really looking, you poke the barrel of your carbine around the corner of the cabin and fire twice. The recoil is much greater than you expect and the noise is incredible. Those long rifle cartridges pack a serious kick. But you're prepared for it now and you drop to one knee with the gun properly braced against your shoulder and your eye trained on the sights as you edge round the corner.
You catch a glimpse of movement as he dives back towards the tree. Not enough for you to shoot at, but you know you have him pinned down now. You look around as much as you dare to scan for any other people, seeing nothing, but remaining cautious.
Things go quiet for a few moments. You probably hold the advantage now: you know exactly where he is and you very likely have superior firepower. Todd probably heard the flurry of gunfire and will be returning to camp. The moment is still exceedingly dangerous, but you hold quite a few of the cards.
Negotiate? Move? Wait?
