Chapter 4 by Zurai

What do you choose?

Mage

You look over the options quickly, but with only 30 seconds, there isn't much time for deep thought. Your race, Helltouched Human, gets a bonus to magic and mental stats, so you decide to pick mage. Suddenly, you are overwhelmed by a flood of knowledge and you fall to your knees with a cry of confusion and pain as a series of prompts blossom in your vision.

Congratulations! You have reached levels 1 through 5 in Magical Theory. You are now a Novice of Magical Theory; from now on, when you attempt to learn a spell, the chance of success is increased by +5%.
Congratulations! You have reached levels 1 through 5 in Fire Magic. You are now a Novice of Fire Magic; you have +10% resistance to fire damage.
Congratulations! You have reached levels 1 through 5 in Vivimancy. You are now a Novice of Vivimancy; from now on, you will recover Health 10% faster.

Congratulations! You have learned the spell Flame Jet.
Congratulations! You have learned the ritual Patch Wounds.

You have earned 150 experience for advancing 3 Skills to Novice rank.

You reel in shock, unable to comprehend what has just happened. There's no way a game could just suddenly fill your head with knowledge like this. Immersive VR sets are amazing, but they don't have any connection to the player's brain. A sudden sense of dread fills you and you try to log out of the game. Nothing happens. You frantically look around you, trying to spot some sort of menu option. Nothing.

The old man cackles. "Finally catching on, are you? Good, maybe you'll survive yet, not that I care. I'm almost done with this contract and if I never see you again I'll be happy. No, I told you, no questions! All that's left is for me to give you a quick tutorial, a couple of items, and pass on a message from your Patron. I was not contracted to answer any stupid questions and any question you could conceivably ask right now would be stupid so just stay put and listen.

"Good. Now, if you unfocus your eyes for just a moment, you'll see an icon appear in the upper left corner of your vision. No, don't look at it! It's going to say in the upper left corner regardless of where you look, idiot. It's not really there. That is your status screen. Just mentally focus on it and think of it opening. Yes, there you go."

You follow the cantankerous fellow's directions and suddenly a window expands in your mind. You can see it, but it doesn't obscure your vision. You get a slight headache trying to concentrate on both seeing the world around you and your status window, but it's manageable.

"Well, at least you can follow directions. Your status screen contains information on what makes you, you. Your Attributes, your Traits, Skills, all of that. You can get more details on anything in your status screen by concentrating on it and willing the information to appear, the same way you got to your status screen in the first place. Don't bother doing that now because I'm not going to stop and wait and I'm not going to say any of this twice. You can play with yourself when I leave, and probably should. Go ahead and focus on the status window closing. Don't worry that it takes a bit of effort, you'll learn to do it subconsciously quickly enough.

"Since you decided to gain the starting skills of a mage -- terrible decision by the way, how in the Realms do you expect to survive out here with just a couple spells and some theory? -- I have a few items for you from your Patron." He waved his hand and a six foot long spear, a backpack, a waterskin, and a small metal box appeared in front of him and immediately fell to the ground. "Finally, two pieces of advice from your Patron. First, your Limitless ability is unique to you in all of the Realms and if the wrong entities were to learn of it they would seek you out to destroy you, so it is in your best interest to keep that close to your chest. Second, this place is sealed to your soul. Once I leave, only you will be able to find and enter the canyon. You are safe here, which is good for you because this is where you will return when you die. There's nothing to eat, though, so you can't stay long. Anyway, that's me done and gone."

And, so saying, the man begins to fade from view. You call out to him to wait, but within no more than five seconds he has completely vanished. Still having a hard time grasping what this all means for you, you nonetheless pick up the items on the ground in front of you. With each, another prompt appears in your vision. Now that you've seen your status screen, though, you realize that the prompts are similar -- they do not obstruct your vision if you concentrate the right way.

You have found: Spear. Damage: 4-7. Reach: Extended. Attack Speed: Slow. Rarity: Common. Item Quality: Average.
You have found: Backpack. Rarity: Common. Item Quality: Average.
You have found: Waterskin. Rarity: Common. Item Quality: Average. Capacity: 1 liter.
