Madison Makes It

Chapter 3 by Daemony Daemony

Madison had made it.

She was the first woman in the corporation’s history to reach the executive level—and the youngest person ever to lead its Human Resources department.

She had spent her career fighting the things she believed held women back: gender inequality, double standards, sexual harassment, and the quiet assumptions that shaped everyday life in the workplace. Now, finally, she was in a position to do more than speak out about them. She had the authority to change things.

And Madison had every intention of using it.

Her first major initiative was a mandatory training session for the Board of Directors. She had spent weeks preparing it. This would not be another PowerPoint presentation everyone politely endured before returning to business as usual. It was designed to be interactive, uncomfortable, and impossible to forget.

The centerpiece was a series of role-playing exercises.

Her goal was simple: put the people at the top in the position of those beneath them. Let them experience what it felt like to be judged, patronized, stereotyped, or expected to perform a humiliating task simply because of their gender.

If they had to live through it—even for a few minutes—perhaps they would finally understand.

So Madison stood before the assembled directors, a thick stack of cards in her hand, and explained the rules.

“One at a time, each of you will draw a card,” she said. “The card contains a role you’ll assume and a task you’ll be required to perform. George, would you shuffle them, please?”

She handed the stack to the colleague seated beside her.

From the back of the room, James raised a hand.

“And what happens if someone refuses?”

Madison smiled inwardly.

Of course.

She had expected resistance. Some of these men had spent decades at the top of the corporate hierarchy. The moment the exercise required them to do something uncomfortable—something they might dismiss as beneath them or as women’s work—someone was bound to look for a way out.

“There are no opt-outs,” Madison said evenly. “If you draw a card, you complete the task exactly as written. Anyone who refuses will be relieved of their leadership responsibilities for one month.”

The room grew noticeably quieter.

“No exceptions?” someone asked.

“None whatsoever.” Madison folded her arms. “The rules apply to every single person in this room.”

She could afford to sound confident. She had discussed the seminar with the CEO beforehand, and the plan had received the necessary approval.

Her gaze moved slowly across the room, making sure everyone understood that she was serious.

And because she was watching the men so closely, she failed to notice George slipping an additional card onto the top of the stack beneath the edge of the table.

“Why don’t you demonstrate?” Mike suggested. “Draw the first card yourself and show us how this works.”

Madison turned toward him.

She had anticipated that, too.

Fine.

None of the exercises were pleasant. That was the point. But there was nothing in that stack she hadn’t encountered, in one form or another, during her professional life. Nothing she had prepared would be enough to shake her.

“Of course,” she said. “I’d be happy to.”

She took the top card.

Read it.

Then blinked.

What?

She turned the card over.

She turned it back.

That can’t be right.

But the words remained exactly the same.

Stand up and take off all your clothes in front of everyone in the seminar.

Madison stared at the card.

Oh, no.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she slowly looked up at the room full of directors.

There was no way around it.

She had enforced the rules herself.

And, as she had just made perfectly clear, they applied to everyone.
