Lunch is served.

"Well, I'm glad you're finally happy, son," Edward remarked with a rare smile.

"Thanks, dad," Ryan replied, honored by his father's sentimentality.

"It's so good to see you out of your depressing slump since Madelaine broke off your engagement," his father noted.

"Dad..."

"Edward..."

"How long has it been?" Edward wondered, seeming to either not notice or ignore his family's words. "Two years? Or is it three?"

"Dad, it's been two and a half years..."

"Who is Madelaine?" Marlissa asked, feigning ignorance, which earned her a glare from her husband.

"Oh, Ryan did not tell you about Madelaine, dear?" Catherine gasped, touching her daughter-in-law's hand.

Marlissa shook her head.

Catherine looked her son to get his approval to offer an explanation to Marlissa.

Ryan nodded begrudgingly.

"Well, dear, Madelaine was Ryan's fiancée," Catherine explained. "They met in our department when she was working on her doctorate."

"She's beautiful but not as beautiful as you, Sam," Edward interjected.

"Edward!"

"Well, it's true!"

"It is okay, mom," Marlissa smiled, giddy that she actually called someone 'mom' when as demon she had no parents.

"This ring was hers, I believe," Catherine noted, touching Marlissa's engagement ring.

"I'm surprised you didn't sell it, son," Edward wondered.

"Believe me I was tempted to but it had...," Ryan sighed, "...sentimental value."

Marlissa leaned over to kiss her husband. "I am so sorry, love."

But before Ryan's mother could reveal more about his ex-fiancée the waitress returned with their food.
