Love beneath the waves
Vel plunged into the waves, distantly aware that the water was icy cold, but not really feeling it. Immediately, he felt her touch. Her hands were on his upper arms, gently holding him. He opened his eyes and was met by a visage of unearthly beauty.

Her hair was black as night and her skin a shiny, almost metallic blue. Her eyes as well as some other parts of her face glowed softly, Vel found it calming. Her scales… her scales were beautiful. A darker shade of blue than her skin, they were mostly concentrated on her long and strong tail. Her bra also seemed to be made from them. Her lips were plump and dark and, as far as Vel could tell, extremely kissable. Her song was stronger and clearer than ever, and oh so lovely.
In that moment he realized something: the song was telepathic. It wasn’t in his mind, his defenses were untouched and his mind un-addled, but that was how he heard it. The sailors had plugged their ears out of superstition, perhaps upon seeing the lights, but it was pointless. Likely none of them had even been able to pick up on the song, like Dina hadn’t.
Now that he understood Vel reached for the song with his mind, following it like a blazing trail to the mind of the beauty facing him. She welcomed his touch, lowering her defenses and letting him flow into her innermost sanctum.
Suddenly, pain. Not in his mind, no, in his chest. In his whole body. Air, he was out of air! He’d been so caught up in the events of the last few… seconds? It couldn’t have been more than a minute. Even so, he was drowning, and the two of them had drifted quite a bit deeper in those few moments. Luckily, thanks to their minds now being connected, his beautiful suitor saw what the problem was.
She swiftly leaned in, her lips locking onto his in a kiss. The gills on the side of her neck, which had been pretty much invisible until now, flared as they worked hard to supply Vel with breathable air. It worked and Vel felt the pain and panic recede, finally allowing him to process the things he had seen in her mind.
He’d thought of her as his suitor just now, because that was what she was. Among merfolk, at least in this tribe, the females were the ones who courted males. They were still discerning in who they courted of course, but they were the ones to actively pursue the opposite sex. Her glowing eyes and the glowing spots on her face, the song, it was all part of a display meant to attract a mate. Those tales of sailors being lured to their doom were wrong. The sailors might have died of course, but the mermaids who lured them had genuinely sought to court them. He briefly wondered if they might be alive somewhere. She broke the kiss, having left him with enough air for another few moments, and her glowing eyes again met his own. Her voice in his mind swept all other thoughts away.
“Do you really want me; do you accept my courtship?”
Her voice in his mind was like the gentle lapping of waves, and he could feel her frightened excitement in it. She could barely believe he had chosen her and feared it might be too good to be true. That was adorable. Vel didn’t know her, he hadn’t even been sure her kind existed before now, but he knew he did want her. It was fate, or something like that. This was meant to be.
He didn’t need to mentally voice that, she saw those thoughts, his mind being so deep within hers. Her features lit up, the joy briefly making her glow even stronger. In her mind he saw disbelief war with exuberance. There was pride there too, she took incredible, overwhelming pride in this. He didn’t quite understand why she did, but it sure was very sweet.
“Thank you, Promised One. Let us…”
She grew shy for a moment, and her cheeks acquired a few purple blotches. Vel realized that was the mermaid equivalent of blushing. She just kept getting cuter. He saw what she was too afraid to say and saved her from having to say it.
“I would love to consummate our union, my love.”
And love her he did, he somehow knew. Her song had told him much, and seeing into her mind had erased all doubts. She would be one of his wives. He let her see those thoughts too, and he felt her body briefly quiver with excitement. No negative reaction to being one of his wives either, that was good.
“Then come, we must go somewhere-“
He stopped her by pulling her in for another kiss, both because he wanted to wrestle with her salty tongue again and because he needed air. When they broke apart, she had calmed down a bit.
“Let me see you first, my love. Let me fully take in your beauty.”
She blushed purple again but let go her grip on his arms, flapping her tail once to float away a bit. Vel, to his surprise, mostly stayed in place, not really sinking or floating away. Were he not underwater, he would have gasped at the sight of his soon-to-be wife in the rippling moonlight. He would have gasped again as she reached behind her, loosening her scale bra. As she did so, the glowing spots on her face faded, and the glow of her eyes grew much more muted. Perhaps because Vel had accepted her, the display was no longer needed? He stopped wondering about it as her breasts were freed.

Fuck, she was perfect. Her skin was flawless blue, her body soft yet sculpted. The sight of her midriff made Vel want to put a baby in her right now. She giggled and blushed again, Vel having not hidden the thought from her.
“Had you not insisted on this delay, we’d already be doing… that.”
Vel felt himself go rock hard and raised his gaze to her breasts. They were big, big and, by the looks of it, firm. The nipples that crowned them were a much darker shade of blue than the rest of her. His eyes finally reached her gorgeous face again. Her uncertain smile had been replaced by a confident smirk, his reaction to seeing her clearly very reassuring.
“Thank you, my love, for being so kind. I am happy that you find me pleasing.”
Vel pulsed back a reply.
“I find you far beyond pleasing, Dear. Now, kiss me again so I don’t die, then whisk me away to wherever you wanted to. It is time to make love.”
Her blush returned, but her smirk grew into a full-on grin as they once again embraced.
