Chapter 21 by Phreakinsane
Where?
Looking for friends, then the innkeeper
You look around the inn and before long notice something that makes you even more uncomfortable, your friends are nowhere to be seen. With **** calm, you approach the innkeeper, slap a few gold coins on the table in front of you and request a bottle of the strongest drink they have.
The round faced fellow had dark, beady eyes, which narrowed upon seeing your face, which was a clear sign that he recognized you as a man from Reness. However, like any business owner when he saw the color and quality of the coin you offered him, his attitude abruptly took a 180 degree turn.
Suddenly he started to treat you as if you was his long-absent kin. Even slaping your shoulder and loudly welcoming you "atlast" to the buxom raven. A sudden realization dawned on you: you didnt realize it before but there had been many tense eyes turned towards you when you first walked up to the bar. His sudden change of attitude visibly relaxed everyone, causing you to notice the tension through its disappearance. _odd. _You thought to yourself.
After a brief discussion and detailed description of your companions, the innkeeper frowned. "Lad, I've not seen anyone like that in here tonight. But if my guess is right about where you got thar' purse, yee've best just forget 'bout e'm and thank yer luck." The man muttered quietly into my ear. The sincerity in his tone and gaze caused me even more worry.
"Thank you, friend. I think you've shared something with me I wasnt supposed to know." You reply. Confused from it all, your mind is going to a thousand different places, trying to figure out whats really going on.
"Would you mind telling me whats really going on?" You ask him, more than a little desperation in your voice.
He looks into your eyes and opens his mouth to speak, clearly the coin given to him caused him to feel indebted to you, and that makes you wonder just how much you overpaid for the unopened bottle of liquor resting comfortably next to you on the bar.
His look quickly changes from one of sympathy to one of fear as he looks over to the door. Even that expression quickly changes almost as fast as it had come to one of a merry innkeeper devoid of any troubles. "Greetings 'yer lordships. Wha'en might I be doin' for ye?" He calls loudly towards the door.
As a unconsious reaction to it all, you look over your shoulder to see three unhappy looking men with time and a half more muscles on each of them than you've ever seen on a man to date. And thats saying something. They are wearing the uniforms of the towns guard and are staring at you with quite unfriendly gazes.
"John of Renee?" The first one calls to you, looking you dead in the eyes with his pale blue, chillingly cold gaze. You nod casually, recovered from your initial surprise, you decide it best to play dumb here.
The man nods once, seemingly unexpecting your honesty, his body was wound up for action, likely expecting some kind of escape attempt or attack from you. Now that you've shown him that you 'clearly' mean to cause no mischief, he goes about things in a manner that you suspect is his 'nice guy'.
"Very well. Come with me. The Quartermaster has some business with you that cannot wait until morning." He states this in a matter-of-fact way that shows he has no problems lying. But you already know that the quartermaster has gone home for the day.
