Chapter 8

What do you do?

Look into Cummings Chemicals

The potential of finding out who Flower is, and thus, what she might be getting at, is too hard to resist. Since your office is smashed up, you head to the library to do some research.

The first query you search for is: ‘Cummings Chemicals Employees’ and find the following headlines: Young chemist goes missing, accompanied by a smattering of unimportant details and a picture.

Poor girl. This damn city is just rife with crime. Oh well, this particular crime isn’t what interests you.

You try just ‘Cummings Chemicals’ and get a treasure trove of articles, from newest to oldest:

Local chemical makers accused of strongarm tactics.

Chemist George Cummings essential to law enforcement’s case against mob boss Bucatini. (Interesting)

Chemical operation political influence grows

Chemical manufacturers put competition out of business.

George Cummings and family look to build empire.

That last one is accompanied by a picture of George and his daughter Rose.

Well shit, there it is. She’s not just a salesgirl, she’s the princess of the Cummings Chemicals empire. So what does that mean exactly? You’re not sure. But it’s clear that she may have priorities beyond just herself. You find yourself suddenly feeling less trusting of her. The business seems pretty cutthroat, and if she’s likely to do whatever it takes to get ahead, even if it means giving plenty of head.

There’s something else interesting about these investigative articles. They’re all from the Herald, and they have the same byline: Ace Clementine.

Maybe it’s time to pay this reporter a visit, see what he knows about your flower Rose, what he knows about Cummings Chemicals political ambitions and anti-mob actions. Something tells you this is all tied together.

“Can I help you?” The soft question comes from behind you.

It’s a pretty librarian. Very pretty. You don’t need her help right now (you could ask who checked out The Scarlet Letter but you know she won’t give you that info because librarians are fucking steadfast) but you might need her help later, so maybe some flirting is called for.

“You know, when I was a kid, librarians were mean old ladies who just went around shushing people. They weren’t helpful. They weren’t pretty either.”

She blushes.

“I bet you’ve never shushed anyone in your life.” You give her a smile.

“Don’t let my kindness fool you, I have.” She says forthcomingly. “It’s just part of the job. It’s not always for peoples volume. Sometimes they things they talk about are just… not appropriate.”

“We wouldn’t want to make the library into an inappropriate space now.” You suggest. She shakes her head emphatically. You lean in and whisper. “Tell me, would it be inappropriate to say that you’re the prettiest creature I’ve ever seen.”

She blushes harder, her pink skin turning red. “I guess not.” She whispers back with a cute grin.

“Then I don’t have to worry about neon’ shushed.” You get up, give her a wink and head for the door.

“Wait…” she whispers at you loudly… maybe too loudly. So you turn around. “You know…” she bites her lip shyly, “if you want me, you can have me.”

Do you take her up on her offer?
