Look for the contact

“It’s a good thing that I brushed up on my German.” Clarke tells me in Russian.

“How did you learn to speak two languages so well?” I ask him. “I’m very impressed. You blow me away.”

“I had a head start with German. My grandmother was Swiss, and taught me some when I was a child. Russian on the other hand… countless hours of classes and practice. I had some help from the OSS.”

“It must have been hard.”

“Hard would be an understatement.”

“So before we get too close, can we go over the plan one more time?”

“Sergeant Dadonov tells me that you have a contact in this village, an informant. Do you know him?”

“I’ve seen him once but never talked to him directly. He has a pretty impressive mustache.”

“Should be easy to find then. We need to meet with him, and then that’s where you will come in.”

“What do I need to do?”

“You’re going to use your feminine charm to lure an enemy soldier into his home, where I will be waiting. Remember, just one of them!”

“Okay, then what?”

“After I… take care of him, I’ll steal his uniform. You will put on a show to distract the guards, and I’ll sneak in to find what we need.”

Being followed by an enemy soldier into a tight little space. Being bait. What could possibly go wrong?

“Should have brought some scissors…” I mutter under my breath.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.” I say, and laugh nervously.

Things become much more serious as we enter the heart of the village. We stop our conversation and try to draw as little attention as possible. There are a few fascists scattered about, patrolling the street. We duck into an alley.

There is our man, I think. He stands with his hands in his pockets. Nervously, I approach and greet him.

“I like ice with my vodka.” I tell him.

“I like vodka with my vodka.” He answers. “Come on, let’s get off the street.

The old man leads us into his apartment, and we review our plan with him. He takes us to a bedroom.

“This is the place.” He says. “You can hide in the closet.”

“Perfect.” Clarke says.

“Just one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“I get to watch too.”
