Look at the smaller pillar

You examine the smaller pillar and the strange ring of symbols surrounding it. The pillar itself is engraved with a pictogram of the sun. It takes you a few moments before you realize this is a sundial! The symbols then must be numbers, then. It's remarkable this thing still works and hasn't eroded into uselessness. If this realm still has the same 24-hour day that you're familiar with, then according to the sundial it's currently about noon. Neat!

You stand in the ruins of an ancient temple to mathematics. One pillar has a magnetic compass embedded in it, another pillar is marked with a sextant, and there's a third, much smaller pillar surrounded by a ring of strange markings.
