Chapter 56 by Artican Artican

What can Linda do to escape?

Linda tries to contact the ship.

It was who knows how far between me and the others, but I did see open sky, so maybe I could reach the Ishtar. I took the chance and threw on my mask. "Trask to Ishtar! Emergency beam up!" I managed to get out before the beast swiftly plucked the device from my head and threw it to the ground. I was afraid it was going to jump at me and attack back it was more interested in the breathing apparatus that it had just smashed up. It gave the device a few stamps with it's foot to end its suffering and my hopes of using it again. Meanwhile I took the distraction as an opportunity to run for it. I leaped into the thickets of the jungle again, immediately getting cut up by the leaves and foliage, but I didn't have time to think about that as the beast was hot on my trail!

I managed to slip into underbrush and a tighter section of the jungle in the hopes that the creature's large size would slow it down, but behind me I felt and heard the crashing of trees as the thing just powered through the obstacles. It was within grasp of me when suddenly I felt the reassuring tingle of my body in transport. Things lit up brightly around me and then dimmed down again. The next thing I saw was Crewman Brooke behind the transporter consoles.

"Having a bit too wild a time down there?" Brooke smirked with raised eyebrow to my present condition.

I was beaten and bruised and naked, just barely surviving a wild beast attack. The adrenaline pumping in my veins were throbbing through my temples, so I couldn't come up with a snappy come back. I simply responded, "Thanks..." before passing out on the transport pad.

When I awoke, I was in sick bay, where Dr. Akira was looking me over. I checked my body. The bruises and cuts were gone but I was still feeling a bit woozy.

"Good to see you're awake," Akira noted as she came up to my bed. "I see you managed to lose your clothes again..." she remarked as she ran a tricorder scan on me. I was in a medical bay gown, so someone was decent enough to dress me while I was out. "I've treated the superficial wounds, but your system took quite a shock. I thought it best to let you rest that off," Akira continued. "So what did you run into down there?"

"A big beast of a thing!" I replied, sitting up. "It was like a bear ape but twice as large!"

Akira looked at me incredulously. "The planet barely has enough islands to house small rodents, let alone large land fauna. How would such a creature survive on such a small land mass?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know, but it was there... I was deep in an underwater grotto with Ensign LaSalle and Westland. Our guide was with us too. I stepped onto the beach while the others were in the water and that's when the beast swooped in and snatched me up! Next thing I know, I'm on the surface."

"Well, this sounds like something the captain should look into." Dr. Akira said.

"Could you.. not mention the clothes part?" I asked.

After the captain was informed, she contacted the Hrimgnnr about the incident. "They claimed there was no evidence of large mammals, like you described, found on their surface worlds," Captain Lance informed me when I met with her in her ready room.

"Captain, I saw what I saw..." I defended myself.

"I don't disagree with you, ensign, it's just visual sightings are one thing, but we have no proof it exists," Lance said.

"What about bio scans?" I asked.

"Greene looked over the area you were beamed up from and found some evidence of life, but it disappeared soon after." Lance admitted.

"Then there WAS something there!" I said.

"Yes, but no sure indication of what."

"This is like a Bigfoot sighting," I lamented.

"Well, I would have let this issue go as it is, since you're safe and it doesn't seem as if this creature, whatever it is, would pose any sort of threat toward the sea dwelling Hrimgnnrs, but Lieutenant Greene seems to have taken an interest in pursuing this case as well." The captain revealed. "She wants to mount an expedition to track down your 'Bigfoot' and find out how it has evaded notice from the natives for so long."

"Yes, captain," I said, sort of relieved that they would be looking into what it was that kidnapped and chased me.

"If you're up to the task, I'm pretty sure the lieutenant could keep a spot open for you as well..." Lance added.

Does Linda join the search mission?
