Chapter 56 by Artican Artican

What happened?

Linda gets arrested

I searched the dimly lit room for my clothes, but they were nowhere in sight. I managed to find the light switch and activate it though to figure out what room I was in. It appeared to be someone's quarters, but there was no telling who's. I took a bedsheet to wrap around myself before stepping out of the room and into a living space. There, two figures were busy examining something. It was Slakeeva and Margany looking over what appeared to be a body.

"What's happened?" I asked them.

Slakeeva turned around and aimed a disrupter pistol at me. I raised my arms in surrender, dropping my makeshift coverings. "Ensign Linda Trask, I am placing you under arrest for the **** of Angkar Noria!"

It's no exaggeration that the accusation to me by complete surprise. I just stood there, in shock as Margany cuffed me and led me to their brig. I asked them for details but they said they would inform me after a full inquiry was made. I asked to speak to Captain Lance, but they said that the others had been secured for questioning. A lot of things went through my mind as I was marched down to their brig. How could this happen? Why would someone want to kill Angkar? Why would they frame me? I couldn't have done it... or could I? I had no recollection of the previous night after the dinner. We were eating and drinking and then everything when fuzzy and dark. I must have not have been able to handle their local spirits very well. Still, even intoxicated, i couldn't see myself committing ****. There must have been a more logical explanation for this.

I had plenty of time to concoct theories while in the holding cell. It was nothing more than a bare room with a single bench to sit on. There was no guard, but the **** field did its job of keeping me in. I continued to mull over the events that occurred, but my mind was blank and I grew frustrated with trying to piece together a puzzle when I couldn't even see the pieces.

It was maybe an hour or so before someone came in to check up on me. I couldn't really tell for sure since there was no way to tell time in the brig. The imposing figure of Slakeeva stood in front of my cell. She looked at me sternly, as if trying to contemplate something without having to ask outright. After a long stare down, she begrudgingly asked, "Why did you do it?"

"I didn't do it!" I denied immediately.

"You were in the quarters with Angkar when he was found dead. Your crew mates have already fled. We are a trusted, close knit group. None of us would have done it, so that leaves you," Slakeeva said, listing out her evidence as matters of fact.

"Wait a minute!" I called out, if only to give me time to process the recent events. "My captain and the others are gone?"

"Yes, they are nowhere to be found on the station and the shuttle craft they arrived in left our docks early in the morning. Our scans also indicate that your ship has left the area as well."

"That can't be!" I replied. "They'd never leave me behind!"

"Clearly you value yourself higher than your fellows," Slakeeva responded passively. "Regardless, while we will be contacting the authorities to capture your star ship along with your accomplices, right now we have you. So, confess and tell me why you would kill Angkar!"

"I saved his life!" I reminded the scientist. "Why would I turn around and kill him?"

"Yes, it doesn't make much sense unless it was a ploy to get him to lead you to our outpost. His experiment failed, but maybe there was information to be gleaned from our past work," Slakeeva deduced.

"We wouldn't come to steal your work!" I shot back, insulted by the insinuation.

"Oh? We hardly know each other, who is to say what you are capable of?"

"We are Starfleet Officers! We wouldn't do this sort of thing..."

"Of course, your membership in this supposed confederation puts you above suspicion... a federation that is located several quadrants away..." Slakeeva went said, leading on to another train of thought, "A quadrant that you and your mates have admitted to be **** to return to... perhaps **** enough to steal untest warp technology?"

"It didn't happen like that!" I said, but she looked convinced with her own argument.

"You have nothing but your word, Linda Trask. We will see how that holds up in our courts."

With that, she left me to contemplate my fate.

Will Linda figure a way out of this?
