Chapter 5 by Danielle2722 Danielle2722

What do you spot?

Lights in the distance.

Examining the environment around you in darkness as night closes in, you quickly spot what seems to be a collection of electric lights in the distance, on the far side of the forest-park. Activating your vision magnification and low-light vision, you zoom in on the source, until it becomes clear that it looks like the gates of some sort of fenced off shanty town, nestled down a street between two skyscrapers.

With a quick pulse of your internal rangefinder, you tag the gates location for future reference. It won't be reliable without a satellite signal, but unless your navigation system is thrown off by a blow to the head, it should be enough to keep you going in the right direction.

You're no survivalist, so it's hard to estimate how long the journey will take. At a normal walking pace through clear terrain in the day, likely only a few hours, but that almost couldn't be further from the current situation.

Probably about day, if I don't get lost?

Not wanting to lose any more time, you hop down from the roof of the shuttle, the impact of landing on your feet absorbed by your mechanical legs, and start climbing down the ridge-face into the forest below. It's a hard climb, but you make it look easy.

With a final jump, you crash down onto the forest floor, your line of sight limited to about thirty feet before plantlife completely clouds your sight in any given direction. With barely any light from the moon penetrating the tree cover, you're reduced to black and white, slightly blurry nightvision. Focusing on the directional marker hovering in your HUD, you fight your way through the foliage towards your goal.

Does anything happen on your journey?
