Chapter 3 by Krevmh Krevmh

Who Does Shepard Pick?

Liara and Samara

Realistically, this was a mission where every non-biotic was a potential liability. Even opening the visor for a second had dangers. Jack was a great biotic, but one that couldn't be trusted in tight spaces for too long. Miranda was equally great, but her biotics were more physical. Asari treated it as almost an ESP, something spiritual, it would be good to maximize on Asari. Even the meekest and most fragile of them could handle a drop with the right precautions.

"Samara, you and Liara suit up and start preparations. If we're lucky, we'll be able to check without so much as opening a window."

Samara remained expressionless. "A logical choice, commander."

"Yes, logical," Liara winced, "Though you should not expect me to thank you for it."

"Never was going to be a glorious job, should at least make it a quick one." Shepard nodded.

Of course, that bore the unspoken apology for putting them through this. There was no room for a formal apology in a briefing, but Shepard made an expression to Liara that did what it could to give an unspoken one.

"When we get back, I'll owe you a round, how about that?"

"Am I owed one as well?" Samara glanced at them playfully.

"If you want, I owe both of you one. I didn't know justicars drank."

"Perhaps not the drink, but being owed "one". I am allowed to drink, though I do not have much taste for it."

"Sure," Shepard shrugged, "I don't expect you to ask for something unreasonable."

Samara nodded, nothing in the way she did it was remotely comforting. The usual detached expressionlessness made sinister gestures out of the innocent.

"Come, young one, I will help prepare you." She took Liara's hand.

"O-oh, thank you, though I already know how to put on-" Liara's voice disappeared around the corner.

Shepard dismissed the rest and ducked to her own cabin for some last-second preparations. Bringing an Asari along was one thing, bringing two along was quite another. There was an unspoken risk, one inherent with working with Asari.

What was the risk?
