Chapter 9 by cphi cphi

What's next?

Let him sleep...

The first twenty minutes or so passed by without incident. After that, Billy's head began to sink inexorably towards his arms. His eyes were heavy lidded, and he couldn't suppress a yawn or two.
"No sleeping, Mr. Preston."
"Look, Miss Wilson, I know its detention and everything, but I didn't get much...." his yawn was wide and unstifled. "Sleep last night."
Beth knew a little something about Billy's home life. Born to heroin addicts, he had been in the foster system since he was 8. His parents had left him home alone for four days straight while they were getting high in a smack house somewhere. From what Beth had been told by the guidance counselor, Billy's current foster parents were not the best, and since Billy was 18 now, they were kicking him out of the house at the end of the school year whether he graduated or not. Now that there was no more money for his care, they had no incentive besides affection to keep helping him, and Billy's behavior had used up that well a while ago.
Beth also knew that Billy was working nights and sometimes overnights at a distribution center to save enough money for when he got kicked out. He would need a car and an apartment, and so he was burning the candle at both ends while still trying have some kind of life. If he wasn't such an inappropriate, arrogant jerk, Beth would have been much more sympathetic.
"Fine, Billy, but if Principal Schiff checks in, and you're sleeping, we're both going to get in trouble."
"Just...just let me rest my eyes, ok?"
"Ok."
A few minutes later, Billy was out like a candle. Beth sighed. I know he's a smart kid. I wish I could help him, but he shoots himself in the foot so much.
With Billy asleep, Beth contemplated how to use the time.
