Leaf from Pallet Town

Of all the people Grunt could have pictured defeating Giovanni, it never once seemed possible that it would be a child of all people. And a teenage girl too!

A quick search of relevant Trainers from Pallet Town quickly surrendered the identity of the one responsible for Team Rocket's destruction. While he had personally never battled her himself, he had been among many that had heard the rumors of a brat interfering with Team Rocket operations all by herself. If he had known then what he knew now, he wouldn't have laughed with the majority of his fellow operatives at the failures suffered by those agents against her.

One of the more important pieces of information about her though was the fact that she was in possession of a Pokedex. Her ownership of one suggested that she was sponsored by Professor Oak, especially since he has a residence there. Many Trainers throughout the world look upon Trainers with a Pokedex in equal parts envy and jealousy. Alongside its intended use to catalogue the various Pokemon it's owner captures and record their information, it also acts as an "experience refiner". A Train with a Pokedex has a much easier time training multiple Pokemon to the highest level of their abilities in comparatively less time than an average Trainer can with just three. Many of the greatest non-Pokedex Trainers in the world had to focus on a small group of Pokemon to strengthen and raise to achieve in years the kind of results a Dex User could achieve in months, if not weeks. True, it wasn't an instant success tool, but it was still a significant advantage that many other Trainers simply could not hope to have access to.

Perhaps that would be the deciding factor in Grunt and Leaf's future confrontation. As long as she remained in possession of a Pokedex, there were literally no limits she could not overcome. And as it stood, Grunt had no means of removing it from her possession. If he was going to bridge the gap between his Pokemon and hers, he would need to acquire a Dex of his own.
