Lars was a smart boy. He earned top marks in every subject, projecting him to be top of his class at his university. He was also quite nerdy type, not successful with girls.

He was very surprised when he received an email that he may not be able to graduate in the spring. He immediately scheduled a meeting with his advisor to figure out what had gone wrong.

Arriving at the office, Lars paced back and forth waiting to be let in. He had planned everything so perfectly to ensure his success, and now he was being told he may not graduate. He felt like his life was collapsing around him.

After a few minutes, the door opened and an older gentleman peeked his head out.

“You must be Lars, please come in.” The man said, gesturing further into his office.

Lars walked in and saw the absolute mess of a desk, with stacks of papers and books nearly covering the wooden top.

“So, let me see here.” The advisor said, sitting on the other side of the desk. “You are here because you are confused about why you are not able to graduate in the spring, correct?”

“Yes, sir.” Lars responded politely. “I just don’t understand what I am missing. I have all my credits lined up.”

“Yes, I see that. Unfortunately you are missing our mandatory volunteer hours.” The man said, his eyes locked on the papers in front of him. “At this point, it is almost impossible for you to meet the required time.”

Lars felt his heart sink. “There must be something I can do.” He begged, tears starting to well up in the corners of his eyes.

“Well, Lars, most of the volunteer positions have been taken. However, I do one that would be interested in taking you on. Nothing prestigious, but they will get you the hours you need.” He said, sliding Lars a paper. “If you agree, we can have you start tomorrow.”

The only available position was a farm hand at a dairy farm close by. Lars was not thrilled, but he agreed. He couldn’t risk letting his life fall apart.

"This position has one advantage: If you can attract more volunteers, their hours will count towards your allotment. Don't worry too much, you won't be alone there. There is already another volunteer joining who you know from class."
