Who invited you?

Kylie

Chapter 5 by ManRayMansker ManRayMansker

Kylie’s message lit up your phone on a quiet Tuesday night. Hey. Can we talk?

You called instead of texting. Her voice came through steady but worn, the way it always did when she was carrying something heavy.

“Greg left,” she said after the usual check-ins. “Last week. Packed a bag and said he couldn’t do the rest of it. Wedding’s off. Everything’s off.”

You sat up straighter. Kyle—now Kylie—had lived next door since you were both seven. Entire summers had been spent in each other’s yards, sneaking down to the same creek, trading secrets, seeing each other naked more times than either of you could count long before it ever felt complicated. When Kyle started becoming Kylie in senior year, you were the first person she told. You went to appointments with her, sat through the nervous waits before surgeries, practiced her new name until it settled naturally on your tongue. You’d already bought the suit for the wedding.

“I’m really sorry,” you said.

“I know. Listen… we had this couple’s package booked. Optimization in Paradise. Two weeks, all-inclusive, full immersive reset. Non-refundable. Greg’s name is still on the second ticket. I can switch it to yours if you want it. No pressure. I just don’t want to go alone, and you’re the only one who’s known every version of me.”

You looked around your quiet apartment. Two weeks in the Caribbean with the person who’d been your constant since childhood. The person you’d watched change and still trusted more than almost anyone.

“Yeah,” you said. “I’ll go.”

The flight was long but easy. Kylie met you at the gate looking like she hadn’t slept enough—long ginger hair in a loose braid, freckles standing out against fair skin, a soft white linen shirt over cutoff shorts. She hugged you the way she always had, full and unselfconscious, and for a second it felt exactly like every summer since you were kids.

“Thanks for doing this,” she murmured against your shoulder. “Really.”

Customs and the private transfer blurred together. The resort rose out of turquoise water and manicured palms like something designed to erase the rest of the world. Staff in pale uniforms moved with quiet efficiency, checking you both in under the couple’s package without a single raised eyebrow. A golf cart carried you along a shaded path to a low villa half-hidden by flowering hedges.

The room stopped you both for a moment.

It was larger than it needed to be. A California King bed dominated the space, dressed in crisp white linens that looked almost luminous against the dark wood floor. Floor-to-ceiling glass made up the entire ocean-facing wall; beyond it the water stretched unbroken to the horizon, late-afternoon light turning everything gold. The bathroom wasn’t separate—it was simply part of the same open space. A wide, completely clear glass shower enclosure sat against the far wall, two adjustable heads mounted at chest height and a third rainfall nozzle centered overhead. No curtains, no frosted glass, no privacy at all. Whoever used it would be fully visible from the bed, the sitting area, the entire room.

Kylie gave a short, surprised laugh. “Well. That’s… open.”

You set your bag down near the closet. She did the same on the opposite side, the way you’d always divided space without discussing it. She stretched her arms over her head until her spine cracked, then glanced toward the shower.

“I’m sticky from the plane. Mind if I go first?”

“Go ahead.”

She grabbed a towel and toiletry bag and stepped into the glass enclosure without any self-consciousness. You turned toward the ocean view, giving her the politeness of not staring, and started unpacking a few shirts. The sound of water hitting tile filled the room a moment later. Steam began to ghost across the glass.

You finished with your bag and turned back without thinking.

Kylie stood under the rainfall nozzle, head tipped back, eyes closed. Water ran in clear sheets over her freckled shoulders, down the soft curve of her breasts, along the gentle swell of her stomach and hips. Ginger hair hung dark and heavy down her back. She reached up to work shampoo through it, arms raised, body fully on display in the open glass—no barrier, no shadow, nothing between you and the person you’d grown up with.

You’d seen Kyle naked a hundred times as kids. You’d seen Kylie in various stages of transition, supportive and careful never to make it weird. But this was different. The soft lighting, the steam, the complete lack of privacy, the way the water made every line of her body gleam. Something in your chest pulled tight and stayed there.

She opened her eyes, caught you looking, and didn’t cover herself. Instead she gave the smallest, tired smile—the same one she’d given you the day she told you her new name.

“You can look,” she said over the water, voice quiet. “It’s not like you haven’t before.”

You stood there slack-jawed, staring, the open room and the ocean and the entire optimization package suddenly feeling much larger than two weeks in paradise.
