The creak of the leather cut through the muffled bass as Mira covered the final few steps toward me. She came to a halt so close that the tapered toes of her familiar boots stopped barely an inch from my own feet. The pungent scent of smooth leather mingled with the warmth of her skin and that distinct fragrance I normally associated with the sterile seminar rooms of the Charité.
My gaze was pinned rigidly downward, yet I caught every movement: the casual shift of her weight to one leg, the glint of the buckles at her ankles catching the amber light. My heart hammered against my ribs with a force that practically cut off my air.
"Well now," she said softly. Her voice remained entirely level, carried by a cool, almost clinical amusement. "Colleague."
I could not produce a sound. My tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth.
Mira lifted her hand slowly. Her fingertips—the very hands that usually turned the pages of anatomy atlases and handled reflex hammers—settled against my throat. She traced the velvet fabric of the choker, feeling the contours of the ring beneath it, before trailing lower without the slightest hesitation. She glided over the sheer mesh covering my chest, down toward my left flank. When her fingertip grazed the delicate lines of the fineline tattoo (∇ + ♀) etched over my pelvic bone, an involuntary shiver tore through my frame.
"So that was the 'locked vertebra,'" she murmured, almost offhand, while her thumb slowly traced the arc of the Venus symbol. "And the pain whenever you bent down…" Her eyes drifted further down, settling where the surgical steel micro-casing emerged flush and seamless from the narrow cut of the leather. She inspected the matte faceplate, the snug fit against the pubic bone, the absolute finality of the construction. A delicate, knowing smile touched her lips. "Fascinating. Truly fascinating, John."
"Do you like what you see?"
The voice came from the side. Loona had stepped up, a heavy cocktail glass in each hand. Her green eyes flashed with watchful, cold calculation. Beside her stood Nadja, drawing the chain taut around her wrist, appraising Mira with a soft, faintly curious smile.
Mira did not flinch or startle. She withdrew her hand slowly from my hip, took half a step aside, and met Loona's gaze dead-on—composed, upright, without a shred of embarrassment.
"It explains a great deal," Mira replied smoothly. "I spent the entire week wondering why my study partner was walking around the Charité looking like he was wired to a high-voltage line. Now the clinical picture finally makes sense."
Loona's eyes narrowed by a fraction, before a thin, amused smile ghosted over her features. She took in Mira's leather halter, the brief shorts, the legs encased in knee-high boots, and the effortless familiarity with which she moved through the club. This was no timid fellow student stumbling accidentally into a dark secret.
"So you are Mira," Loona noted, handing one of the glasses to Nadja. "He mentioned you. The straight-A student from the second row."
"And you must be Loona," Mira countered on equal footing. Her eyes swept over Loona's harness top and the poised, commanding set of her shoulders. "He described you as his flatmate. Very… discreet."
A quiet chuckle escaped Nadja. "Discretion happens to be one of his finer qualities. Even if he has no use for it tonight."
I kept my head bowed low, staring at the floorboards between Mira's boots, feeling the heat of mortification rush across my face. The two spheres of my life had not simply collided; they were now standing shoulder to shoulder, measuring one another, discussing me like an anatomical specimen.
Loona took a step closer to Mira. Her stance was that of a woman charting her territory with precision: attentive, dominant, yet open to engagement. She did not relinquish the reins lightly—least of all to someone from outside her circle. Yet Mira already possessed John's secret anyway, and her unfazed, practiced demeanor within the KitKatClub made it clear that she understood the rules of this space.
"He is accompanying us tonight," Loona said evenly, taking a sip from her glass. "And since you already know what lies beneath his coat, you might as well join us. We were just heading over to the lounge area."
Mira tilted her head slightly. A bright, curious spark flared in her dark eyes. "I would love to. It would be a genuine pity to leave such a thorough case study incomplete."
"Very good," Loona said. Then she turned to me. Her tone shifted without missing a beat into that cool, unyielding severity that crushed all resistance before it could form: "On your knees, John."
My knees gave way almost on their own. The cold parquet bit into my bones as I lowered myself to the floor before the women. The mesh pulled taut over my thighs; the micro-casing jammed hard against my pubic bone.
Nadja held the chain taut while Loona took a step forward, bringing the toe of her lace-up boot directly before my face.
"You know what protocol demands when we receive company," Loona directed in a low voice.
Bowing my upper body down, I pressed my lips against the cool, polished leather of her footwear, held the contact for a moment, and repeated the gesture silently against Nadja's heel. The women above me accepted the submission with that easy, casual entitlement that broke me down a little further every single time.
Mira stood watching, taking in every inch of the surrender. There was no mockery in her expression, only the dark, mounting fascination of a woman recognizing the power distributed in this room—and realizing she had just been invited to take her share of it.
"Up," Loona commanded.
I drew myself upright, immediately locking my hands behind my back, holding my posture rigid with my eyes cast down. Loona gave a nod to Nadja, who gave the chain a short tug to set my pace.
"Come along, Mira," Loona said in an almost familiar tone. "Let us find a quieter corner. You will have to tell us how he carries himself when he tries to play the dutiful doctor in front of you."
Mira fell into step alongside the two women with a faint smile. The creak of her boots accompanied every stride I took as we moved deeper into the pulsing shadows of the club.
The pressure of Mira's boot against the steel micro-casing increased by a fraction. It was not a rough strike, but a calculated, almost clinical assessment of resistance. The rigid cylinder bore down relentlessly against my pubic bone, my glans crushed against the front plate, driving a dull, cutting ache deep into the pathways of my groin. My jaw ground tight, my fingers clawing into one another behind my back to suppress the reflex to pull my hips away.
Mira registered the resistance. Her eyes remained fixed on my face, reading every subtle twitch around the corners of my mouth as a dark gleam entered her pupils.
"Not a millimeter of play," she observed softly, her voice carrying that detached fascination she usually reserved for an unambiguous radiographic finding. "Completely locked down. Not even the beginning of an erection possible."
Loona watched the exchange over the rim of her glass. Her green eyes gleamed calmly, almost approvingly. The initial wariness had given way to cool satisfaction. She saw how naturally Mira initiated the contact, devoid of the false modesty or hypocritical outrage one might have expected from an academic peer.
"The system is seamless," Loona remarked offhandedly. "A rotating barrel lock. Without the specialized key, there is no escape. He has worn it uninterrupted for weeks."
Mira withdrew the tip of her boot slowly, trailing the firm leather along the inside of my thigh, before settling back into the leather cushions of the booth. She crossed her legs with practiced poise, leaving the slender heel of her boot suspended just above the floorboards—barely inches from my right hand.
"And the tattoo?" Mira asked, her gaze drifting toward my exposed flank, where the nabla and Venus symbol (∇ + ♀) rested pitch-black and sharp-edged against the bone. "I assume that was the appointment that made him vanish so abruptly in the middle of the afternoon a week and a half ago?"
"He required a mark that cannot be taken off," Loona answered dryly. "Clothes can be changed. A collar can be concealed. But this remains. Anyone who sees him stripped of fabric knows the score immediately."
A low, throaty laugh slipped from Mira's lips. She shook her head slowly, looking down at me from above.
"When I think back to how he sat in the seminar room on Thursday… bolt upright, sweat on his brow, desperate not to touch the backrest." Leaning forward slightly, she rested her elbows on her knees and met my gaze dead-on. "You were practically unraveling from the pain, weren't you, John? Because your back was still on fire from your last session."
I could not hold her gaze. The humiliation choked my throat. Knowing that she had deciphered every single one of my carefully guarded vulnerabilities in hindsight, and was now discussing them with Loona like the clinical progression of a chronic illness, degraded me to my core—while simultaneously driving the blood hot through my veins.
"Answer her, John," Loona commanded with quiet sharpness.
"Yes," I forced out with effort. My voice sounded raspy against the low end of the dancefloor. "It… it burned."
"And yet you functioned," Mira said softly, an undercurrent of respect coloring her tone that was far more dangerous than overt ridicule. "The aortic stenosis was flawless. Pressure-volume loops spot on. He shows remarkable discipline when kept on a short leash."
Loona offered a thin smile. She appeared to savor Mira's appraisal. It stood as confirmation that her conditioning was bearing fruit—even in spaces where she could not be physically present.
"That is precisely why he is here," Loona said, letting the chain clink softly in her grip. "He requires the pressure. Without it, he drifts. But under firm direction, he becomes precise."
She studied Mira once more with close attention: the black leather top, the revealing shorts, the complete composure with which she accepted the scene at the KitKatClub as entirely natural.
"You are remarkably unfazed for someone who only knew him in a white coat until now," Loona observed.
Mira took a sip from her drink, let her eyes wander briefly across the silhouettes moving through the haze, and returned her gaze to Loona.
"I study medicine, Loona. I judge things by their functionality, not by conventional morality. And what I see here clearly functions." She tilted her head slightly. "Besides… John's constant tension at university has intrigued me for weeks. It is almost a relief to see what was driving it. And to see how easily that tension can be steered."
Loona gave a slow nod. An unspoken bridge of mutual understanding and shared authority formed between the two women. There was no rivalry; Loona knew precisely who she was and held absolute ownership over me, and Mira respected that boundary entirely—while claiming her own seat at the table with every gesture.
"Nadja will be occupied for a while," Loona said eventually, setting her empty glass on the table. "And I have no intention of spending the rest of the night just sitting around here. How well do you know the back area, Mira?"
"Quite well," Mira replied without hesitation. A subtle, predatory spark lit her dark eyes. "The alcoves by the pillars are packed tonight, but down near the vaulted chambers there are quieter corners. There is plenty of room."
Loona rose with fluid grace. Her patent skirt rustled faintly, the stiletto heels finding firm purchase on the wooden floor. She drew the chain taut, bringing me to my feet with a curt, unmistakable tug.
"Lead the way, then," Loona decided, looking at Mira. "He stays right behind us. Once we are down there, you are welcome to inspect our star student's anatomy up close."
Mira's smile deepened. Standing up, she smoothed down her black leather top and stepped so close that I felt the creak of her boots right beside my thighs. Her hand came up, tracing casually across the back of my neck—right where she had touched me on Thursday—before running down the muscles of my throat with firm, unyielding pressure toward my shoulder.
"With pleasure," she whispered, turning away to lead the way into the shadows of the club.
