Sweet time before Jan returns home?
Kissing, cuddling and talking of the future.
Steve leaned back against Kaya and wrapped one arm around her waist. Softly, he kissed her cheek. After several moments, Kaya took a sip of her whisky. “Steve, can I ask you something?” she said.
He laughed lightly, “Of course,” he said.
“If I’m pregnant, where do we go from here?” she asked. Steve started slightly. He didn’t mean to, but the question seemed to come out of nowhere.
“Well, I suppose that depends,” he said, “I will always be here for you and our baby, but we would need to talk to Jan about other things as well.”
Kaya nodded, “I feel like an outsider,” she said.
Steve turned to face her properly, “Kaya, you aren’t an outsider to Jan and me; you are our girlfriend, and we love you.”
“Sorry,” Kaya corrected, “An outsider in this place, in this culture.” She took a deep breath, “I am committed to you and Jan. I wore jewellery to indicate that to the housewarming. But I don’t know your human conventions.”
Steve kissed her on the cheek again, “You, me and Jan are making our own conventions between the centaur way and the human way,” he said. “I want you to be happy and comfortable with our relationship.”
Kaya turned her upper torso to face him more, “So, you are not opposed to living together?” she asked.
“My God, no, I love the idea. It’s how we do it that overwhelms me. Do we have a place for us three, or include your parents. I know you are close to Mina and Lin. Do we include them? If so, how do we do it? How do we set boundaries? All of that,” Steve replied.
Kaya looked confused for a moment, “What do you mean boundaries?” Kaya asked.
“Well, what I mean is, if we all live together and, say, your mother was interested in,” Steve hesitated.
Kaya smiled, “If my mother was interested in having sex with you? Why is that any different to now? We live next door to each other, it’s not hard. We find a place that has some private space for each of us. So, if we had five bedrooms and a nursery, what would be the problem?”
Steve paused and blinked, “Well, I suppose it wouldn’t be very different,” he admitted.
Kaya nodded her agreement, “And we probably wouldn’t need five. I mean, I expect you, Jan and I would spend the majority of our evenings together. I mean, we already do when I stay over here.”
Steve was lost for words. After several moments he said, “I suppose you are right,” he said. “There is no reason for us to not live together.”
Kaya smiled and flicked her tail, “Well, you know, we could have a look for places together now.”
Steve nodded, missing her suggestion, “Alright,” he turned the laptop to face him, “let’s look, and we will talk to Jan when she gets home. I mean, it’s a big step, and honestly,” Steve chuckled slightly, “I don’t know if it would make the conversation with our family more or less awkward. Hey Mum and Dad, you know how Jan and I are about to get married, well, we are looking at buying a place with our new girlfriend and her parents. Their centaur’s it’s a cultural thing.”
Kaya giggled as she pulled up an earlier set of pages she had been browsing. “I may have already had a bit of a look.”
Steve smiled and hugged her tightly, “So, what’s your favourite?”
She flicked over to an old church a few kilometres out of the city. “Well, this one has plenty of room, both in the house and the surrounding buildings and plenty of yard space. I know my father would love to have a big garden so he could grow food.”
Steve looked at it quickly, leaning over Kaya to flick down the listing. The wooden building was old, with columns supporting a higher level in the main building and a nearby high set of hills that dropped quickly to the yard of the property. “It’s beautiful. So, it’s an old church that has been modified to be a home. The main building has a kitchen and everything. The other buildings are sort of self-contained little units.”
Kaya nodded, “The main building also has a loft bedroom, but I was thinking that the main building could be communal space and maybe make the upstairs area a home office for you and Jan.”
Steve blinked, “Why just us? Wouldn’t it be nice as sort of an upstairs lounge room?” As he asked, he realised the problem, “Oh, it has a spiral staircase to get upstairs. That might be hard for you and your parents.”
Kaya nodded, “Exactly, but with a nice big kitchen, an outdoor kitchen, and four other external buildings. One could be for Mum and Dad, one could be for you and Jan, I could have one, you and Jan would always be welcome, and we’d have one spare for any time we entertain.”
Steve laughed, “You mean entertain humans? If we entertain myth folk, we will probably just end up in a tangle of limbs on the floor of the church. It really is gorgeous,” he said. “Wait, it’s cheap! Why’s it so cheap?”
Kaya shrugged, “I’m not sure. It has this disclaimer thing, but I didn’t know what it meant.”
Steve had a quick read of the disclaimer, “Ahh, it used to be a compound for a cult. If there was certain kinds of illegal activity, then the real estate agent has to disclose that.” He flicked through the pictures of the external buildings. “This is gorgeous. We might need to do some renovations, but it is lovely. Let’s send it to your parents and Jan to get their opinion. I might also link Mitch. He’s a project manager for a construction company that doesn’t normally do houses, but hey, he could give us an idea of the price to renovate it.”
Kaya smiled, “You really want this?” she asked, “I mean, I know it’s a big step for humans, moving in together.”
Steve smiled, “I have one question and one condition. How do centaurs traditionally sleep, and can we organise that here?”
Kaya beamed, “Well, we’re nomadic, more often than not, sleeping outside under the cover of trees, preferably near fresh flowing water. And,” Kaya flicked over to a Google Maps satellite image, “that looks like a little waterfall leading to a stream.”
“Not many trees, but we could plant a little private glade. It would be nice to have picnics,” he said.
“And for other things,” Kaya said with a suggestive grin.
Steve laughed, “You want me to take you out to a glade near a waterfall and fuck you?”
Kaya shook her head, “Nope, I want you to make love to me under the waterfall. Sure, it will be cold, but I’m sure I can find a way to keep you warm.”
They shared the potential with the relevant people before looking over a few others. None were as well suited for their needs, but there were options.
