Chapter 16
by philipcollin
What is your first move?
Kill the summoner
Your legs begin to shake as the demon runs toward you; the only thing you are armed with is a broken table leg and a small amount of magic, terror begins to grip you in its icy fist.
Looking down at the sharpened piece of metal you feel yourself calm, panicking will do you no good. First things first, get yourself away from the approaching demon.
Forcing magic down into your legs you throw yourself away from the demon, and rack your brains for a plan. Looking at your opponents you make a snap decision, well more of a gamble really. You guess that for a demon to survive in this world it requires a summoner, and with that summoner gone, so will the demon.
The shard of metal you are holding is virtually useless unless enchanted, and so you decide to use it as a makeshift projectile.
Focusing magic to compress a ball of air at the base of the pole you take sight at the summoner. Taking aim while running is much too difficult you realise, and you must stop to throw the metal spear. Sliding to a halt you line up the throw, there should be just about enough time to kill the summoner before the demon reaches you. If the gamble pays off the demon will disappear, leaving you alive, if it fails, well you would stand no chance anyway if you kept on running, either way, this is your best hope.
You throw the spear at the summoner, and release the spell holding the air compressed. The shockwave from the air blasting out launches the spear towards your target at immense speeds, the very air around it glowing at its passing.
The spear rams into the summoners face, a mysterious flare of blue light coming from the impact point, and carries him through the air, and pinning him to a nearby wall.
The demon next to you takes a massive swing at your face, and you raise your arm in a futile attempt to defend yourself. The giant clawed hand sails towards you, and just as it is about to strike you, fades slightly, passing through your body with no ill effects. The demon suddenly disappears, leaving behind only a dull boom.
You stand up, surprisingly enough alive, and feel a great sense of elation fill you.
Throwing your head back you begin to laugh, relief mixing with the adrenaline from the fight. You won a fight, single handed against a demon, no help from your own demon needed at all. You laugh, and feel all your worries fade away, you won!
Suddenly your chest goes numb, and your laughter dies. You try to start again, and frown in confusion as nothing comes out. Looking down you notice a long, bloody piece of metal protruding from your chest.
You bring up your hands to grip the bar, and pull weakly on it. You feel a breath brush your ear, and a girls cold voice flickers in your fading mind.
“That was for James, you bastard.”
The shard is suddenly pulled out of your body, and you drop to the ground, collapsing like a puppet with its strings cut.
You lie on your side on the cold ground, and watch in grim fascination as a red pool begins to form on the ground in front of you. All the world begins to fade, blackness obscuring your vision until only the red remains.
And then, nothing.
