Chapter 18

How does the mission go?
Kari and Linda plan the infiltration.
I briefed Kari on the situation and immediately she started formulating a plan. She had scouted out the science building on one of her outdoor excursions to visit a client. "This was after the initiation party, so I was curious and wanted to know more about how the science division operated," she explained, "Unfortunately, our job positions didn't give me much leverage for getting into a high minded institution like that."
I nodded as I fiddled with the pasta on my plate. We sat in the courtyard where the audio monitors could not hear us. I kept looking around as if the entire place was conspiring against us. Who took the captain? Where did they take her? That was what we needed to answer and right now we didn't have much to go on and very little time to solve the mystery.
"I did make a note of the comings and goings of the people there though, " Kari said. "They may frown upon what we do, but I don't think the entire science facility abstains from our form of pleasure; we just have to find the right candidate."
"Candidate?" I asked.
"For getting us inside!" she said confidently as she sipped her drink. "We just have to come up with an innocent looking scheme to get ourselves into the building. Something believable." Of course, Kari was again one step ahead of me on planning. "I happened to have caught the eye of one of the junior scientists at the facility. A passing glance, but from our experience here, I could tell that there was interest." She winked and tilted her head in her well practiced act of allure. "There's a cafe next to the building, where this scientist goes for a break. Tomorrow we just happen to be there and make our introductions in the most seductive way possible. After wooing the employee, we can find an excuse to follow her inside the building. Once inside, one of us would break away and search for Lieutenant Greene, who is still working there."
"Hopefully Greene will know what has happened with the captain," I pointed out. Kari nodded in agreement. "Otherwise we'll have to improvise by accessing the buildings database and scour it for any information on the captain's whereabouts," I concluded.
"There are a lot of loose ends..." Kari said quietly. She was hesitant to go through with it until all the wrinkles had been ironed out. She didn't like undefined variables. "We need to gather more intel about the target and the layout of the location."
"But we're short on time, the Ishtar takes off in less than a day," I pointed out, "We have to act soon."
Kari gritted her teeth. I could tell the unknowns were grating on her. "Alright, but need to have a direction to go once we're inside."
"Bedroom?" I asked suggestively.
"That would be the spot she'd want to take us if we intimated that she'd be getting lucky..." Kari nodded.
"And maybe if we're lucky, it's where we could find Lieutenant Greene," I said hopefully.
"The resident quarters are all on the same block. It's possible..." Kari said with a bit of hope herself. "I guess we find out tomorrow..." I nodded.
