Kai

Lad stared at the smiling twins. Janna blew him a kiss as Joseph sized him up. They had trouble written all over them, and their introduction was not exactly promising. Yeong, the apparent leader of the group hated him for some strange reason he did not quite understand, and it was jarring. He was used to people wanting him in strange and uncomfortable ways that turned out fairly bad, but not outright disdain and distrust. Kai on the other hand was quite endearing. She acted the way he was used to most people acting around him, which was to say, she treated him positively. It felt like an obvious choice on who to warm up to first.

“Kai?” Lad asked nervously.

“Yes?” She lifted her brows and stared at him unintentionally as if he were a small, precious animal that needed protecting. He could see her gulp and guess that her heart was thumping in her chest.

“I do have some questions.”

Kai pointed out the Fox scientists walking around the main floor of the facility. “So, they work for my Dad and Kara, technically, but for all intents and purposes they work for you. Don't bother Mom with anything small and don't tell her I said that, ask any of those guys down there if there's any problems with the suit or any Tek you were given.”

“What was it like growing up-”

“Rich?” She grinned.

“Pretty comfy. It's okay.” She slapped him on the back. He flinched and stumbled towards the rail looking out over the lower floor. She gripped his collar and pulled him back to avoid any chance of him going over the edge.

“You're there now, more or less.”

“I meant... Parents. Were they around most of the time? Was it lonely?”

“Not really. Mom was always with me because of my powers and working with me and such and Dad's been trying to get closer and focusing less on work after the thing with Yeong, so I think it's been pretty good.”

“What thing? Is it related to why she hates me?” Lad asked.

“Ooh. You don't know. It's pretty juicy...” Kai grinned once she saw that she had Lad's attention and exhaled deeply.

“Well, you're with us now so it's probably fine to tell you.”

“Tell me what?” Lad leaned in close.

Kai draped her arm over Lad's shoulders and closed the rest of the distance to speak softly. “She's a time traveler, or was...”

“What?”

“Yeah. According to her, she lived through some messed up timeline and at the very end got to hit some reset button that seemed to make the world a bit brighter. Crazy, huh?”

“That sounds crazy.” Lad admitted flatly.

“But you said 'was.'”

“Yeah, that's the thing. According to her she can't do it anymore and Kara seems to think it has to do with what brought her back and what gave her those powers in the first place. Whatever it was affected... Uhm.” She leaned back and let him go.

“The one you're filling in for.” She said delicately.

“Y-yeah.” Lad offered in an equally delicate tone.

“From what I understand there was a Black that came before me. If you don't mind me asking-”

“It's a bit of a rough point for most of us. Just, for some reason she got hit pretty hard by whatever news Yeong suddenly brought back. She started getting reckless, which was super out of character for her, and...”

“And?”

“Now we don't know. No offense to you, Lad, but you're as much a fill in as you are a replacement. We need the team to be complete, but a big part of that is so that we can save Raithe if we ever figure out where she is, or if she's even still alive.”

Lad frowned uncomfortably. “That's really a lot to put on me.” It was not just the pressure. In another sense it put on him the guilt and anxiety of knowing that his new position and his Sister's safety and comfort were also at stake if the old ChesAn Black, 'Raithe' was ever brought back. He felt a pit form in his stomach as he fought over his feelings. He did not want to wish that she was gone, but if she was not, he wondered what kind of choice he would be able to take to see to it that she did not come back if it was for the sake of Leto. He thought that he would probably have to just lay down and accept that he will be replaced and sent back to the streets again.

“Are you okay?” Kai interjected into his thoughts.

“Sorry, that was a lot to put on, you. Didn't think you'd go pale like that, though, Lad.” She chuckled nervously.

“Gonna get in trouble if Mom thinks I'm bullying you or something.”

“Mrs. Briggs?” Lad looked up and swallowed.

“You can call her Lacie like everyone else. I call her Mom, obviously... She's kinda like the team Mom, though. She cares a lot, and not just about the Tek like she claims.” Lad stared down at the HanCom she gave him.

“You sure you're okay?” She asked in a concerned tone. The cute young Fox rested a hand on his shoulder and squeezed gently.

“I'd feel better if I was able to get along with everyone, not just you.”

“The twins are just...” She pinched the bridge of her nose.

“Strange. You know? They probably don't feel any kinda way about you, Lad. But, do be a bit on guard around them. They're... They're strange. Both of them. You don't wanna get between them, and you definitely don't wanna make either of them jealous in regards to the other. It's a whole thing. Hasn't been too much of a problem with Joseph being the only guy up till now, but who knows?” She shrugged.

“Yeong...” She clicked her tongue.

“Yeong's got some hangups from her previous life. She really, really had her heart set on an Orc that was trying out. Apparently they had a history in the time she lived in.”

“I talked to that guy. He seemed nice.”

“Did he?” Kai smiled politely.

“Because... I know why he wasn't picked for real.”

“Wait, seriously?”

Kai ushered Lad into her room. It smelled faintly of berry and had a cutsie pink aesthetic. Her bed had several stuffed animals piled up against the wall running the length of it. Far more practical and fitting was the several different screens on a desk at the other end of the room. Lad looked down.

“They're not connected to anything...” It was not odd to have small devices that were self contained, but they just seemed to be average monitors.

“The Computer's up here.” She tapped her temple and jumped onto the bed.

“Take a seat.” She motioned towards a computer chair and closed one eye. As Lad sat down he was amazed to see the screens suddenly come to life, showing various sites and other information.

“Wait, you do this on your own without Tek?”

“I'm a living computer and router all in one. Completely wireless. Apparently it's got something to do with where I was 'conceived.'” She stuck her tongue out and tapped it in a gagging motion as she said that. She lounged on the bed and scratched one of her perky ears.

“The juice on that Sebek kid is... He's got tons of red flags. Most of the candidates do, go figure.”

“Red flags?” Lad looked over the multiple screens.

“She was worried that Yeong would be too into it. Keep him at arms length. Don't hype him up or anything. That's the idea I guess. Main thing was, we just can't have someone with that much social power in the group and running around the facility 'affecting' things. Too chaotic, right?”

Kai smirked impishly. “You on the other hand have a far more tame search history.”

Lad cringed. “No no no! Please don't.” He begged.

“I'm sorry, my minds a computer and I'm already thinking about it...” She teased. Lad watched in horror and finally just hid his face as his entire history popped up on the screens.

“It's almost cute. You search 'step-sister' but we all know that's just a gateway to the real thing.”

“I-It's NOT! I swear...”

“Relax.” Kai waved a hand dismissively.
