Chapter 6 by GyroscopicGraphite GyroscopicGraphite

But who?

Kaguya Fortuna, moon princess

The next day, he went back to work, feeling like he just won the lottery. The glasses rested in his pocket, not big enough to alert anyone else to its presense, but certainly able to keep Jehnova's mind a little distracted all day. It was hard work, scrubbing down all the elective rooms for the pampered students that weren't using them for the day. It wasn't, however, until the students who would one day nepotistically inherit their wealthy parent's businesses and trades began to filter out back to their dorms that he could get started in full.

Like most other days, he swept the floors and dusted the walls, going through the classrooms and hallways until the afterschool clubs finished and began to seep into the halls. While the rest went back to their dorms like all the others, a select few stayed behind, joining Jehnova in his late stay at the place. Only one mattered to him right now however (most of them didn't talk to him anyways), and she had already found him.

Kaguya Fortuna was widely regarded as a sort of legend at Athena University and High. Her father was the one who founded the school some 30 years ago. Many have tried to befriend her, only to generally fail to meet her standards. Few held it against her though, due to her almost uncanny ability and willingness to introduce people to the groups and clubs that were scattered across the school. Jehnova often heard gossip while people were changing classes and wandering the halls, and every once in while, he'd hear a story of how Kaguya introduced them to a new sport or hobby they still keep up with.

And it wasn't like she had been given any special privilege when it came to academics. It was common knowledge that Kaguya Fortuna was the best the school had to offer. All her hobbies required strategy and skill and she was a master at games like majong and chess. She was always able to keep up with her highly advanced classes, and it was rare that her test scores weren't the highest in the school.

She wasn't lacking in looks either. She dressed in a fairly conservative manner, but she was more than able to make even a mundane outfit look stunning. There was no standard uniform at Athena University and High, merely a dress code as a guideline, but she still wore a simple black dress with a skirt of reasonable length. She had long white socks that went up to her knees, and a small silver moon charm in her hair. People began calling her the Moon Princess, partly due to her namesake and choice of accessory, but also because people claimed that she radiated beauty, like a delicate flower, preserving a sense of traditional and sophisticated grace that only a select few were able to attain for themselves. It didn't hurt that she always smelled like freshly blooming cherry blossoms.

Perhaps it was due to his status (or lack thereof) as a measly janitor, that he was able to speak with what the people he cleaned up after considered an idol. After all, almost every other person there was leagues above him in terms of both skill and wealth. What's a couple extra steps higher on the ladder of success? Maybe that's precisely why she took an intrest in him. She only showed up after her afterschool activities were finished anyways, and she always seemed intrigued about his life, despite how much more eventful and impressive hers was.

He had seen and heard of her often for years now, but it wasn't until late the last school year that she had begun to talk to him. He wondered why now, of all the time he had been at the place, she came up to him only recently, and so suddenly too, why she had been so interested in his unamusing life. He had always got the feeling that she wasn't actually interested in Jehnova, merely the notion of him, the idea of a poor, simple man, placed among some of the highest people in society, people who were born into greatness. It wasn't an particually enjoyable feeling, but he supposed it was better than the usual silence of the empty halls. Perhaps besides the things he had already planned out, he could get some answers from her.

It's worth a shot.
