Chapter 17 by Vain Vain

What do you ask?

Just then, an interruption

"Chief?!" You suddenly hear a goblin voice from outside, making you snarl a bit as you specifically asked your guards to let noone interrupt you. If they let someone through to your tent it must be something important however, which is why you go to have a look.

"I'm sorry." You apologize to your 'guest', to which she nods in approval. You realize that you've still not cut her ropes, but that could be just as well in case some of your tribesmen got to see her - considering how wild she was when she first was brought before you.

Once outside you're met with a rare sight, as a human female is being willingly escorted into your goblin camp. At first you don't recognize her at all, before you realize that it's actually Sheila. This time she's dressed and carrying herself with a lot more elegance, wearing a comfortable white dress and a diadem on her head, making her look like someone of quite importance.

"Greetings Chief Vehumet." She says with a slight bow before you, while both you and your guards can only stare at her appearance. "I am Sheila, Daughter of Raia. My mother sent me as an ambassador to discuss our peaceful coexistence..."

"I'm... surprised." You smile at her. "If I'd known you were of Amazon nobility, I should have treated you with proper respect..."

"I am sure you would." She agrees, but you notice that she's all tense under all those mild looks, and you can guess as to why.

"I'd also love to hear about how my proposition was met by your mother and sisters!" You continue, but then put on a more solemn look to your face. "But first we might need to discuss what is troubling you..."

"Is it that obvious...?" She asks, though you couldn't possibly have missed how she's constantly eyeing her surroundings as if looking for something in particular. Just then you hear your tent opening behind you, and you don't need to look behind you to know the reason to Sheila taking a deep breath for air. "Reeza...?"

"I'm sorry, Sheila." Says the woman behind you, while several of your warriors come to glare at her with obvious hostility. Several would still have fresh cuts and bruises after trying to capture her, and others had to pay with their lives. "I... got reckless, when I heard you were captured."

"I would've done the same." Sheila just nods compassion, but can read in your face that this is a troublesome situation. She can easily guess that Reeza would not let herself be captured easily, and she too can understand that this incident doesn't bode well for the peace between your tribes. "Will she... be facing a trial, of some kind?"

"Yes." You agree, which seems to reassure her for a moment, until you continue. "But I cannot let it pass so easily as yours. I cannot be a good leader, if I let every spy or warrior just walk out of here after killing several of my men."

"I can understand that." She nods again, though she steels herself for the worst. "So you need a 'sacrifice' for this treaty to become reality? Even my sisters would accept such reasoning, if the trial was fair..."

"I have already decided that your tribe need to pay for her actions in gold, or other tradeables, to the families of the ones she's killed." You tell her, and see Reeza bowing her head in shame as she recognize your offer. "And if you cannot pay, I will try and make her **** as painless as possible."

"Our tribe is not rich..." Sheila says, with mourning in her voice, and you get the feeling that the honour among amazons are such that they rather be killed than become a burden to their tribe. Even if Sheila may be wanting something else, both Reeza and the rest of their tribe would rather chose the other alternative. "What... other kind of payment would your tribe accept as compensation?"

Another solution...?
