Chapter 26
by
GreenBean
How to fight a beast?
Just keep swinging
Her mad grin widened as she committed herself to the violence. She would be a hunter today. With the moon overhead she let out a wild cry as she thrust the torch at the beast's damnable eyes with a sudden lunge forward. The beast begins to reel back and bring its claw to grasp the weapon, but she was too quick, and burning wood crushes into the thing's face and she is surprised at how little weight the thing before her had. Before the thing can recover, Jessica continues her assault, exalting in her power over the thing. Taking a step to match each of its steps backward, Jessica swung burning club madly. Each impact sending sparks flying and filling the air with smell of burnt flesh. The beast continued to be battered.
Soon Jessica found strength waning as her breath came short. The beast-man bent backward from her final strike.
Jessica realized her folly. She had overcommitted. And she doubted her lump of wood would do little to actually kill the vigorous beasts of Yarham. And now here she was gasping for breath as the beast pulled itself upright, hate and victory in its eyes. She could see that she had succeeded at burning it, but she could see the skin heal itself before her. Cold fear pricked at her. The fight in her gone. How could she kill such a beast. She fell backward, and landed hard on the ground. The beast-man looming over her.
"Ya shouldn't haf done that girl" The beast-man breathed, perhaps more human than Jessica had thought.
"I'm... I'm sorry" Jessica said weakly still gasping as she crawled backward.
"Oh-ho ho, ya wi..." the beastman was interrupted by a silver blade entering his throat. And then his chest. Its head sent sprawling with a sudden yank, splashing Jessica with hot blood that sung like sunlight on her skin. She was then greeted by her savior as the beast-man's form slumped to the ground. A strange hunter in a feathered coat, a beaked mask, and twin moon-silver blades still dripping with blood.
"I hate to agree with the beast but he was right." The hunter quipped. A woman by the sounds of it. An older woman.
Jessica got back up, and considered taking another vial of Blood. But temperance got the better of her while the woman was in the room.
How to address this clearly dangerous but helpful hunter?
