You find out when Julie Paul is on shift. You miss her terribly. You feel like Julie, an experienced ward nurse you've known for years, understands you best. You catch her in the nurses' locker room at the end of her shift. She looks uncertainly at you, but listens when you offer your apologies and a bouquet of pink roses.

"I accept," Julie says, brushing away a tear. "You know I started dreaming about you? Waking up wet and aching for you?" She shakes her head. "Yes. Yes, we're back on." She takes a breath. "But not tonight. My husband's mother is visiting, and we're going to the ballet over in the city, so I have to get going right away."

"Does she like roses too?" you ask.

"Hope so," Julie says, "Her favorite color is pink, at least. She says this ballet is a sure thing, anyway. She's followed the company on its tour and seen it in three cities already."

"That's quite dedicated," you say, never having heard of a ballet company having fans eager enough to follow them on tour, like the Grateful Dead. "What does she like about it?"

"Oh, it's a very dramatic ballet," Julie says. "A love triangle, well, actually all three pairs with things going on."

"Does she like to watch the men or the women more?" you ask.

Julie laughs. "I'll have to watch and see if she's ogling the men's packages or the ballerinas' buns."

You laugh. "Tight buns on their heads, tight buns under their leotards. Enjoy the ballet," you tell Julie. "I'd be curious -- pure idle curiosity -- to know if your mother-in-law might be a little bent."

Julie winks. "I'll keep an eye out," she says. She gives you a hug, a quick kiss, and with a little twirl, she and the pink roses are out the door.

You'll see her again. You breathe deeply and stand up from the bench in the dressing room. You feel happy and light on your feet. Julie.

Tomorrow perhaps would be a good time to check in with the college girls and see how their current rotations were concerned. You close your eyes, your nostrils flaring at your recollection of the young women's fragrant vulvas.
