STALK the nurse trainees. 12! They're ready at Brenda's house

You're in Brenda's office talking with her about the trainees' experiences and progress. She nods along, looking more serious when you describe the scrapes they've gotten into.

"I'm glad you got Olivia and Margarita settled in Medical Records," Brenda says.

"Yes, that will give them a chance to let the fuss die down. I'm thinking Labor and Delivery for their next rotation," you say.

"Definitely a lot of sympathy for baby dykes there," Brenda says. "Or you could send them down to the pathology catacombs?" She gives you a sly smile.

"I'm not sure that even putting them in the frigid basement and grossing them out with preserved body parts will keep them cool," you say.

"But they will be less likely to get caught," Brenda says.

You imagine Olivia and Margarita humping each other in a dark little closet in the basement. Your cheeks feel warm. You clear your throat. "Yes," you say. "We better not send anyone to Occupational Therapy as long as Ms. D'Arcy will be in charge."

"Right," Brenda says. "Though OT worked out fine for Anna and Dot." She looks at her workstation screen. "And Jennifer was interested in pathology and surgery. She might be aiming at medicine rather than nursing. If you're keeping the trainees together as buddies, we'll have to see if Kelly would be interested in those departments." Brenda narrows her eyes. "Or perhaps we could extend Jennifer's term, if she does well."

You and Brenda discuss the likely course of the rest of this term for the nurse trainees recruited by her program, the program supported by her old sorority and some of its prosperous graduate members. Brenda's old "Lesbian Until Graduation and Sometimes After" sorority.

"I'm having trouble getting the trainees all together," you say. "Either they're on conflicting shifts, or I can't get a good room."

"No, you don't want any of those rooms," Brenda says. "What times might work?"

You show her the spaces you've blocked out on your calendar as possible days and times.

"Bring them back to my place," Brenda says brightly. "How about this time?" She points to the calendar. "I'll have Betty come over and fix up another buffet."

In a few days, you're on your way to Brenda and Tom's place to have a check-in with this term's nurse trainees. The program, or perhaps Brenda, had arranged transportation for the first get-together. But this time you're driving your big sedan with Dot, Anna, Olivia and Margarita as passengers. Anna's up front and the others in back. You're not surprised that Olivia and Margarita are holding hands. Kelly and Jennifer are driving up together in another car.

Olivia, Margarita, and Dot chatter about the work they've been doing. Anna sits quietly beside you, but the petite, icy blonde shoots you little glances now and again. Once you catch her tongue circling her pursed lips. You remember Anna had asked you straight up, the last time you had had a serious talk with her. "Do you want to lick my asshole again?" she'd said in the busy coffee shop where you had bought her lunch. Do you? Maybe. Maybe. Anna was a screamer. You feel your cheeks get warm. Anna is smiling, her eyes narrowed as if she's about to let a giggle escape.

You arrive at Tom and Brenda's big house outside of town. Kelly and Jennifer pull up a couple minutes later.

Betty opens the door and beckons you in. "Brenda's up in her office," she says. "She promised not to come down until the end of your meeting time unless you ask." Betty points the young women to the buffet set up on the pool deck.

Betty touches your shoulder before you follow the girls to the back. Today she's wearing a white, collared, long-sleeved blouse so her tattoos aren't showing. Her face is sun-touched and has worry lines that her pale-faced stepmother Brenda, some years older, doesn't have.

"Have you told Brenda?" she asks you.
