Chapter 11
by Alexleigh
What's next?
Jorrel, clapping, announces, "Right, let's do this Butt Warriors!"
Emalie says what Mute and you are already thinking, "No. What? Like, can you not hear yourself, Puppy?"
Jorrel's face says that he really does not get what's wrong with the names he's been suggesting lately.
"I really don't get what you guys dislike about the names lately. Are they too good?"
Mute, understanding and compassionate as always, says, "We already had this conversations about 'tunnel fisters.' You make it sound like we're some sort of..." He pauses, looks around, as if he's trying to find the right words. "Like we go out in the woods and do butt stuff. To put it plainly."
You don't quite know whether to feel flattered, embarrassed, or confused that Mute looked at you before finishing that sentence. You settle on feeling flembused.
"What!? No. People think we're the butt of a joke. That our explorations are dangerous and dumb. So we fight against that prejudice, like warriors! Butt Warriors!" Jorrel pumps his fist triumphantly in the air.
Emalie is either really angry or trying really hard not to laugh as she says, "Please. Don't yell Butt Warriors and fist the air. Like, my gosh. The implication."
"You guys are perverts. Really. You are." He makes a show of being hurt. At least you hope it's a show. No matter. Before long, Jorrel regains his composure and continues. "So, I say we split up and check the rooms. If we see anything not-boring, just Shi-- Cry out for the rest of us. We don't want a repeat of what happened in the last weird, weirdly hidden ruin we found."
All of you nod in agreement. None of you have been able to relax around salad dressing since then.
Usually, you'd usually be on retainer in whatever the group designated as base camp. Emalie had the delightful idea to toughen you a bit up - something about comfort zone or something - so now you just tag between people. Like a shitty, out of shape human walkie-talkie.
Just gotta slide up to whoever you want to explore with. Keep Jorrel company. Keep whatever threats may lurk safe from Emalie's wrath. Keep making an idiot of yourself in front of Mute. You'll probably end up checking up on each of them, there's plenty of time. Not like this is an important decision or anything.

What Remains
Humanity did a tiny apocalypse. No one really knows what happened - robot uprising, plague, maybe an invasion of weather balloons. What matters is that humanity still stubbornly lingers around earth like a drunk after closing time. You're Shiva. A twenty something girl caught between freedom and responsibility. Living your life, exploring the world with your friends or working in your father's workshop for all eternity. It shouldn't be a tough choice for most. Then again, no one else has your unique talent of intense self-loathing with an added dose of over thinking every single decision you've ever made. TW: To be added
