Voldemort pulled her into the magical space with him. The transition was a brief, crushing darkness, a feeling of being squeezed through a pipe too narrow for a soul, and then they stumbled out into the familiar, dusty air of the Room of Requirement. But it was changed. The passage was wide now, a dark maw, and beyond it, the sounds of chaos echoed. Screams. shouts. The crash of spellfire.
Voldemort did not hesitate. He strode out of the room, dragging her with him, into the hallway of the seventh floor. The scene was a nightmare. The tapestries were ablaze, the stone walls scarred with curses. Death Eaters, their masks gleaming, were dueling with professors and a handful of brave students. She saw a flash of red hair, Ginny, the reason she's in this mess in the first place, and her heart gave a painful, forgotten squeeze.
Voldemort did not seem to see any of it. His gaze was fixed on the distant end of the corridor, where the grand marble staircase led down to the atrium. He pulled her along, a grim processional through the heart of the war she had once been destined to win.
They met no resistance. The fighting seemed to part before them, a wave of terror preceding the Dark Lord. A lot of students ran away in terror at the dark Lord. They knew of his return. And they knew he had finally breached their castle walls. Rose wanted to run with them. But she was stuck. In place. Her hand locked inside Voldemort.
"Come," he hissed, pulling her forward. "It is time."
They began their descent down the grand staircase, the sounds of battle growing more distant as they moved towards the heart of the castle. The air grew colder, heavier. Rose saw a few bodies along the ground.
