Chapter 11

What's next?

John POV

Suddenly, a piercing scream echoes through the forest, freezing us in our tracks. My heart races—it's the scream of an orc, and it could mean my mom is nearby, in danger.

"Ada, that scream... it might be them," I say, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and hope.

Ada nods, her expression resolute. "We don't have much time. We need to act quickly but strategically." She scans our surroundings, formulating a plan. "Marcus, you and John head towards the source of that scream. Lily and I will support you from above."

Marcus, clenches his fists. "Got it. Let's move, John."

Ada turns to Lily, our red-haired mage and alchemist. "Lily, we need to find a high point where we can see the whole area and provide cover."

Lily adjusts her glasses, determination in her eyes. "Understood. Let's go, Ada."

Before Marcus and I set off, Ada places her hand on my shoulder. "Remember what you felt earlier. If you want to rescue your mom that is."

I take a deep breath, feeling a surge of energy. "I won't let her down."

With a final nod, we split up. Ada and Lily move swiftly through the forest, while Marcus and I make our way towards the sound of the scream. The forest seems to whisper around me, and I can feel its magic coursing through my veins.

Finally, we break through to a clearing and see three orcs devouring a grilled bear. My heart skips a beat when I spot a cage nearby, my mom inside. She's wearing her red summer dress, now ragged and torn from her escape and struggle through the forest.

"Marcus, what's the plan?" I whisper, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and determination.

Marcus grips his massive shield and axe, a fierce look in his eyes. "We take them down."

With that, he charges forward, letting out a battle cry. I follow closely behind, my dagger clutched tightly in my hand. The orcs react with guttural roars, their expressions twisting with inner ****.

Marcus slams into the first two orcs with his shield, sending them stumbling back. His axe swings in a deadly arc, keeping them at bay. The third orc, momentarily stunned, tries to strike Marcus, but I dart forward and stab it with my dagger.

From the corner of my eye, I see an arrow charged with light pierce through one of the orcs attacking Marcus, helping him fend off his opponents. Ada and Lily must have found their vantage point.

The orc I stabbed roars in pain and rage, grabbing my face and throwing me across the clearing.

"John!" My **** mother screamed her heart out.

I hit the ground hard, the world spinning for a moment. When I get back up, I see the orc who threw me rushing towards me, his eyes burning with fury.

I do my best to dodge and block his wild attacks, but he's much stronger than the one I fought earlier. Each swing of his weapon sends vibrations through my bones, and I struggle to find an opening to counterattack.

With each passing second, the fight becomes more ****. I can hear Marcus battling the other orcs behind me, and I know I need to end this quickly to help him. The orc swings again, and I narrowly dodge, feeling the rush of air as his weapon passes inches from my head.

"Come on, John!" I mutter to myself, trying to find a way to turn the tide. The forest's magic pulses around me, and I make it part of my body, part of my movement, part of me, part of my anger and my urgency.

I close my eyes for a split second, reaching out to the forest for strength. I feel a warmth spread from my core to my fingertips, and as the orc swings again, I focus on that warmth. A burst of flames erupts from my hand, striking the orc in the chest and sending him stumbling back with a howl of pain.

Surprised by the power I just unleashed, I take a deep breath and center myself. The forest’s magic is alive within me, and I can feel it responding to my emotions. The orc recovers and charges again, but this time, I’m ready.

As he swings his weapon, I channel the magic once more, feeling a surge of energy flow through me. Flames burst from my feet, propelling me forward with incredible speed. I dodge the orc’s attack and, with a swift motion, slash at his legs, causing him to roar in pain and frustration.

With another surge of power, I focus the magic into my dagger, which ignites with fiery energy. The orc, now enraged, charges again, but I’m faster. I duck under his swing and leap into the air, using the flames at my feet to propel myself higher. As I come down, I aim my dagger at his neck.

Time seems to slow as my dagger slices through the air, the flames trailing behind it like a comet. The orc’s eyes widen in shock as the blade meets its mark, cutting through his neck with a burst of flames. His head falls, and his body collapses to the ground with a heavy thud.

Breathing heavily, I take a moment to steady myself. The flames around my dagger flicker and die, leaving only the faint glow of the forest’s magic around me. I glance over at Marcus, who is still battling the remaining orcs. With one last deep breath, I rush to his aid, ready to finish the fight and save my mom.

Summoning the forest’s magic once more, I feel the flames ignite beneath my feet. I propel myself into the air, aiming to strike an orc’s neck like before.

But this orc is quicker than the last. He anticipates my trajectory, and as I soar towards him, I see his blade swinging up to meet me. My heart races, and for a split second, I think I’m done for.

Suddenly, an arrow charged with light pierces the orc’s hand, causing him to drop his weapon. I glance towards the high point and see Ada, her bow drawn and eyes focused.

Seizing the opportunity, with a swift, fluid motion, I bring my flaming dagger across his neck, executing him before he can recover. He collapses to the ground, lifeless.

Marcus, seeing the opening, lets out a battle cry and charges at the last orc. His shield slams into the creature, and with a powerful swing of his axe, he brings the orc down. The clearing falls silent, save for the heavy breathing of Marcus and me.

I rush to the cage where my mom is held. She looks up, her eyes filled with relief and tears. Her red summer dress is torn and ragged, but she’s alive. I fumble with the lock, my hands shaking, until finally, it clicks open.

“Mom!” I exclaim, pulling her into a tight embrace.

“Oh, John,” she sobs, hugging me back just as fiercely. “I knew you’d come for me.”

Marcus approaches, a satisfied grin on his face. “You did good, kid,” he says, clapping a hand on my shoulder.

With my mom safely in my arms, I turn to Ada, expecting her to lead us back out of the forest. But she looks around, her eyes scanning the trees as if searching for something more.

"We should keep moving forward," she says, her voice firm. "We need to find out what these orcs are up to."

Marcus shakes his head, his expression resolute. "Ada, we can’t risk Sarah's safety. She’s been through enough already. We need to get her back to the village."

Lily nods in agreement, adjusting her glasses. "He's right. We can't put her in more danger. Let's get her back and regroup. We can come back later with more support."

Ada hesitates, her gaze flickering between us and the depths of the forest. Finally, she sighs and nods. "Alright. You three get her to safety. I’ll continue tracking them alone. We need to know what they're planning."

I start to protest, but Ada raises a hand. "I’ll be fine. I’m faster and quieter on my own. Besides, someone needs to gather more information while the trail is still fresh."

Reluctantly, I nod. "Be careful, Ada."

"Always am."

With that, Ada disappears into the forest. I turn to Marcus and Lily, who are already preparing to leave.

"We need to move quickly," Marcus says, his voice steady. "Let’s get out of here."

I lift my mom into my arms, her weight familiar and comforting despite the circumstances. She rests her head against my shoulder, exhausted but safe. Together, we begin the trek back through the forest. I keep my focus on the rhythm of my mom’s breathing lifting her chest agains mine and the steady pace of our steps.

Finally, the dense trees begin to thin, and we can see the edge of the forest. Relief washes over me as we step out into the open, leaving the shadows behind.

As we step out of the forest, the tension begins to lift. My mom, still cradled in my arms, looks up at me with wide eyes.

"John, where did you learn to fight like that?" she asks, her voice filled with a mix of astonishment and pride.

I smile down at her, trying to keep my voice steady despite the exhaustion. "I had some good teachers and friends to help me. And I had to save you, Mom."

She reaches up, cupping my face with her hand. "You were incredible. I couldn't believe my eyes. You've grown so strong." I lean into her touch, feeling a surge of warmth and love. Tears well up in her eyes, and she pulls me into a tight embrace, her voice trembling with emotion. "I’m so proud of you, John. And so grateful. Thank you for coming for me. I was so scared I’d never see you again."

Marcus and Lily exchange soft smiles, giving us a moment of privacy. I hug my mom tightly, feeling the weight of the world lift off my shoulders.

"We're together now, Mom. You're safe. That’s all that matters."

She nods, her tears soaking into my shirt.

As we continue our journey back to the village, my mom's arms wrapped around me.
