Jessica Fletcher didn't even open her eyes to silence her alarm the first time, only by the third time did she register anything was unusual about this morning and it took another 5 minutes to really internalize what it actually was.

She hesitated for a moment "It is far too early to be on something," she said hoping logic would shock her brain back into reality. It didn't so she hit accept figuring an intangible, likely imagined, reward can't be less effective at getting her to participate in self care than any previous failures. This revealed her room with her queen sized bed pushed up against the corner, dresser at the foot of it, a mess of clothes covering the otherwise open floor.

Ignoring the mess as best she can in order to not go into a depressive spiral she had her usual morning fap and started getting ready for the day on auto pilot while waking up. By the time she had finished a bowl of cereal she had fully woken up just in time to see some text pop up with the quest rewards, giving her the realization that the aforementioned intangible rewards did work to give her a productive morning. While rinsing her bowl she considered messing around with the windows to see if there was more to this system than nebulous XP but she was interrupted by her phone reminding her she had a college class this morning.

She ditched the bowl in the sink, rushed to grab her purse, and was out the house leaving barely enough time for her mom to shout a happy birthday from her own bedroom before the front door shut behind her. She started on her way to school and finally had about 30 minutes of time free of anything except walking to actually think more about her morning hallucination and perhaps experiment with it. She thought 'stats,' nothing, next she thought 'menu,' again nothing, finally she thought 'character sheet,' which triggered a small pulling sensation in her head which took her about 5 minutes to actually latch onto and cause a large purple window to pop up about a foot from her face. Before even registering anything on the window itself she looked around in shock to see if anyone else saw it and noticed three things: firstly, the window did not follow her line of sight, secondly, nobody did indeed seem to notice the window, and lastly, she somehow missed that everybody had a name tag. She focused on one.

'Too much information,' Jessica panicked 'rewind back to the character sheet.' She dismissed the achievement and skill, this time actually looking closely at the character sheet.

"ONE EXPERIENCE AWAY FROM LEVEL UP," She exclaimed. Normally this would get stares but this isn't the first time she's exclaimed something game related on the way to school. You'd think she wouldn't get embarrassed after this many times, or that she'd learn to not yell her surprise and frustration yet here we are.

She took some deep breaths to calm and center herself before continuing with her task of understanding what was going on 'I can't believe the quest this morning was exactly enough to edge level 5, that is so unfair! But nothing I can do about it, I guess. What else... I have seven stats, though one seems more like a negative for every day life, why is it my highest? MP? Does this mean I can do magic? I'll have to test that later. There is a lot of flavor information, and lastly skills...' She mentally focused on each skill. While no windows showed up as she expected, little tooltips did appear.

Passive (Core) Skill: Gamer's System lvl MAX

Most things you do are translated into game-like abilities such as skills, windows, and quests

Passive (Core) Skill: Gamer's Body lvl MAX

Allows your physical form to be like that of a video game, taking health instead of injuries and more

Active Skill: Observe lvl 1 (0/10)

Look carefully at something to gain more detailed information about it

Cost: 2 MP

'Those gamer skills are extremely useful... does that mean?' Jessica digs a nail into her wrist to the familiar point of drawing blood but as soon as she stops the cut closes, there's no blood, and her HP has gone down by one point. 'That is broken, and observe?' She focuses hard on someone. She was somewhat surprised there was no window, instead the information was just suddenly in her head.

'Marianne Suzuki

Level 8: Student

Above-Average Student

23 years old

No relation to The Gamer'

Turns out it's a schoolmate, looking around she realizes she is about 20 minutes out from class and has more time to experiment. Next she uses observe on her purse

'Purse

A normal purse belonging to The Gamer containing everything she needs for college'

She looked back at her character sheet and saw, as the observe skill cost implied, that she was missing 4 MP putting her at 36/40 and with a glance to the observe skill she confirmed that the fraction was the experience the skill needed to level up.

Active Skill: Observe lvl 1 (3/10)

Look carefully at something to gain more detailed information about it

Cost: 2 MP

She filed that away for later testing and instead looked at the other tabs of the character sheet. The inventory tab revealed a new window.

Which she decided to test when she had some privacy, if the inventory worked as she suspected then it my not be smart to have things disappearing into thin air. Tapping on or thinking about the other tabs on her character sheet revealed two empty pages saying "You do not have access to this feature." and "Maybe put yourself out there to have something to put here." Tapping on the cog took her to a slightly overwhelming settings screen which allowed her to adjust anything visually about the inventory screen from font to shape to color. She toggled on a setting which allowed her to project the windows to her phone, now she won't be waving her hands in the empty air when not using the menus mentally, and closed it. The last thing she could currently think of testing was an achievements list, which revealed a long list of question marks with her one unlocked achievement at the top.

Finally she had reached the college campus and she didn't feel comfortable doing much more testing in the 5 minutes it took to reach her class. Sitting at the back of the lecture hall she felt like doing some tests. First she observed another person netting 2 observe XP, then her hoodie which netted 1 observe XP, finally she observed 2 more people to see what happens when a skill levels up.

The answer was not much. Observing the rest of the people in the class as it started left her with 3.5 MP left and one vaguely interesting result.

'Fletcher Raleigh

Level 10: Student

Hobbyist Archer

19 years old

No relation to The Gamer'

'Hey that's my name,' she giggled. When she scanned somebody a second time it resulted in the same info as before and gave 0 skill XP, when she scanned an object she got the info on it and some hovering text directly after.

Past lvl 1 mundane objects will not give any skill XP

At almost empty MP she felt pretty drained so she took a break from the morning chaos to take a deep breath, and finally allow herself to internally freak out about everything going on now that she had nothing to distract herself with. She knew logically she wasn't in a dream, and she had every reason to believe no illicit substances are involved, but the idea that magic is real is not easy to just suddenly accept when given the time to actually process it. Harder still was the idea that magic was happening to her, she lived a pretty boring life of casual gaming every day, barely getting into college, and reading as much fanfiction as possible.

Yet here she is with her laziness and nerdiness given numerical form and information on every person in her first class that she never could have had before. 'God if only there was some sign to tell for certain this was real.' At which point she got an achievement that also dictated its description in her head in a feminine voice.

Jessica opened her inventory, which was as easy as tapping on the tab in her character sheet, and saw the item there as promised 'What are you, Mrs. Claus?'

'You may call me Gaia but if you are good I may reward you some presents'

It was the same voice as the achievement. 'Holy shit a deity is flirting with me, that is terrifying... and hot, nice to meet you ma'am,' she floundered for a moment before asking, 'why?'

'Spoilers'

Afterwards Gaia stopped responding, very uncharacteristic of a Whovian.

By the time she was done observing everybody, freaking out, and flirting with a goddess class was about halfway over. She decided to focus for the rest of class and then she had 2 hours until her 2 PM class, enough time for some private testing and then some lunch. Class was boring and when the professor finally dismissed them she quickly made her way to a secluded corner of campus quickly pulling up her inventory again.

She noted the gear section of her inventory stopped listing her purse when she put it down and that it didn't list the t-shirt she was wearing anywhere, she pulled off her hoodie and watched as the dysphoria hoodie in her body slot changed into subtle pride t-shirt which described her black shirt with a rainbow loop on the right sleeve's hem and a trans loop on the other quite well. She then placed the hoodie into the inventory and saw it appear right under the Very Real Sign mentioned earlier by Gaia in her achievement. She dragged the hoodie into the body slot and she was suddenly wearing the hoodie again. Last thing to test with her inventory was the money so she grabbed her purse, rummaged for the little bit of cash she had on her and placed it into the inventory, the $0 turned into $50 and removing it worked the same but opposite and gave a 50 dollar bill instead of the loose change she had put in, returning the cash to her inventory she moved onto something much more exciting.

Next, excited by the prospect of magic, she decided to see if she could actually use her MP for anything other than observe and figured a good place to start was by understanding the observe skill itself so she got comfortable on the floor and focused inward then used observe on her purse. She felt something moving through her body to her eyes right before observe gave her the familiar information. Realizing it was her magic she did it again to figure out exactly where the magic was coming from. Having a grasp on her magic she tried to move it without using observe, it took about 30 minutes of trying but eventually she got a skill.

Seemingly its active effect was all but useless, testing it on her eyes resulted in her not even being sure if she could see better or if it was just in her head. Next she tried pointing her palm at an empty can and pushing the magic to her hand, she could feel something almost happening but it never did. Then she tried focusing more on what she wanted to happen, which gave no change. Not that she wanted to be Goku but it is disappointing nothing happened.

A few minutes of testing had her deciding she had hit a dead end for now and she checked the time, saw she had an hour left before class, and decided to observe some more people in the cafeteria. After sitting down with a small meal she started observing a few people. The first person she observed was a cute boy who's info terrified her.

'??? "Dusk" ???

Level ??: Dream Drifter

Femboy Cuddleslut

??? years old

No relation to The Gamer'

He seemed to take note of something about her then discarded it, he looked more engrossed in his half-nap than whatever he'd noticed about her. After she observed two more people with nothing notable about them she observed a professor she didn't quite recognize.

'Oliver Spiegel

Level 50: Master of Mirrors

Professor of Conjuration

30 years old

No relation to The Gamer'

This one scared her more because he immediately looked straight at her and started in her direction, Jessica might have fled but he wasn't making a scene, was rather handsome, and she was somewhat frozen in fear or shock so she didn't make to move. He sat next to her and seemingly stretched before everybody disappeared, the world got a slightly off feeling to it, and he locked his eyes on her.
