Jerry finishes his story, but Ryan makes a move

"So what did you turn him into?" Ryan leaned over the table in rapt attention. He and Jerry had moved to one of the booth tables. Jerry had gotten them both cokes, but Ryan's sat untouched. He had been marveling at Jerry's story. The remote sat on the table between them.

"After all that, I didn't 'turn' him into anything." Jerry chuckled and swirled his own drink. "I just... made him forget about the remote and me and I put the idea in his head to leave town and never come back. That guy is probably crying his heart out that he lost it. Maybe... maybe I should've done more. Made him a better person. Made him go home and try and do right by all those women. But I don't know. Changing a person more than the bare minimum didn't sit right with me. Can you imagine just painting over a real live person like that?"

Ryan glanced down at the remote. Jerry didn't notice. He kept talking.

"I mean, here I am spilling my guts out to you, because I feel like I owe you an explanation. And all I did was make you less drunk." Jerry laughed maniacally. "Boy, I tell you, I really needed to get all this off my chest. I've been driving myself nuts over this and now -- wooo, all out. I feel great! How about a drink?"

Jerry got up and walked over to the bar. Ryan looked at him and then the remote. He licked his lips.

"I thought I was cut off?"

"Yeah, but you're sober now, right? Besides, this'll be the good stuff." Jerry reached for a bottle under the bar and starting pouring shots. "I need to celebra-"

Ryan held the remote in his trembling hand, finger on the pause button.
