What's next?
Jasper Reed
The hallways of the Sigma Epsilon Xi house usually smelled of stale beer, industrial-grade floor wax, and the lingering, musk-heavy scent of too many young men living in too small a space. But today, as Jasper Reed pushed through the heavy oak front doors, the silence was what struck him first. It wasn’t the empty silence of a Tuesday morning when everyone was at midterms; it was a heavy, expectant sort of quiet, like the house itself was holding its breath. Jasper, a junior with a reputation for being the house’s reigning king of sarcasm and the go-to guy for a quick-witted take on anything from campus politics to the quality of the cafeteria’s mystery meat, frowned. He adjusted his backpack, his eyes scanning the common room. Usually, there’d be at least two guys sprawled on the leather sofas playing Madden or arguing over a parlay. Today? Nothing. Just the hum of the vending machine and the distant tick of the grandfather clock in the foyer.
"Hello? Anyone died? Or did we finally get evicted for Chads stunt with the fireworks?" Jasper called out.
No response. He shrugged it off. Maybe there was a surprise sorority mixer he hadn’t been invited to, or more likely, the brothers were all sleeping off a late-night bender he’d managed to avoid.
He climbed the stairs, his footsteps echoing on the hardwood. When he reached his room, he felt the usual surge of pride. Unlike the rest of the pigsty that was the frat house, Jasper’s room was an island of order. The bed was made with hospital corners, his textbooks were lined up by height and subject, and his dual-monitor setup glowed like a high-tech altar in the corner.
He dropped his bag, kicked off his shoes, and sank into his ergonomic gaming chair. This was his sanctuary. Here, he wasn’t just a "laid-back junior" or a guy who helped freshmen with their Calculus homework. Here, he was a pillar of a community.
He hit the power button on his custom-built PC. The fans whirred to life, a gentle blue LED glow bathing his face. He didn't even go to YouTube or Discord first. He went straight to Twitch, or rather, the site that had largely replaced it for his specific interests.
The tab opened. Pixel Quest is Live!
Jasper felt a genuine smile tug at his lips. He pulled on his high-end noise-canceling headphones, effectively sealing out the eerie silence of the fraternity house.
On the screen, Penny Wang—known to the world as Pixel Quest—was already in mid-sequence. Jasper leaned in, his eyes widening. Today’s cosplay was a masterpiece. She was dressed as Frieren, the titular elf from the popular anime. The gold-trimmed white tunic draped over her petite frame, the sleeves long and elegant. The skirt was daringly short, meeting the tops of opaque black leggings that hugged her slender legs. She had the prosthetic pointed ears perfectly blended into her hairline, and the white wig was styled into those iconic double pigtails.
Penny was of Chinese heritage, with delicate features that made her look younger than her twenty-two years. She was famously petite, which made her the perfect canvas for characters like Frieren. To Jasper, she wasn't just a streamer; she was the pinnacle of femininity—graceful, playful, and just out of reach.
"Hey, everyone! Welcome back to the quest!" Penny chirped, her voice high and melodic, a perfect match for her high-energy persona. "We’re doing a bit of a marathon today. Some League, maybe some Valorant, and then a long Just Chatting session where I show off some of the new merch!"
Jasper’s fingers flew across the keyboard. Jasper_Reed88: You’re so cute, Penny! This cosplay is 10/10.
He felt a familiar sense of superiority as he watched the chat scroll past at a million miles an hour. Most of these guys were "gray-names," the nameless masses. Jasper’s name was highlighted in a vibrant, tiered-subscriber purple with a badge next to it that signified he was one of the top five donors of all time. He’d spent thousands on her—money from his summer internships, money from his parents’ "textbook fund," whatever it took to stay on that leaderboard.
He knew things the others didn’t. He knew her real name was Penelope, though she went by Penny. He was one of the elite three who had won a raffle last year for a private, "limited edition" digital set of her in a string bikini—a set he kept in an encrypted folder on his desktop like a holy relic. He felt like he had a connection with her. They were practically friends.
"Okay, let's get into some ranked," Penny said, pouting at the camera. "I know, I know, I'm Bronze, but I'm feeling like a Silver today! Don't judge the Frieren aim!
"The stream settled into a rhythm. Jasper watched, his chin resting on his hand. Penny wasn't actually good at League of Legends. In fact, she was terrible. She missed skill shots, walked into obvious traps, and spent half the match apologizing to her teammates. But it didn't matter. She brought a chaotic, bubbly energy to every ****. Every five minutes or so, she’d "accidentally" drop a pen or need to adjust a light, standing up and bending over in front of the camera, giving her thousands of viewers a lingering look at the gold-trimmed skirt and the curve of her black-clad legs.
Jasper felt a familiar heat in his chest. He lived for these moments.
About forty-five minutes into the stream, Penny was in the middle of a particularly brutal team fight when a new donation alert popped up. It wasn't a huge amount—just ten dollars—but the message caught Jasper's eye.
BIG_Q: Hey Penny. It’s Q. Check your DMs?
Jasper snorted. "Get in line, pal," he muttered to his empty room. He’d sent Penny hundreds of DMs over the last two years—messages of encouragement, game tips, even poems. She’d never replied to a single one, which he understood. A girl like her was busy. She had a brand to protect.
But then, something impossible happened.
Penny, who usually ignored the text of small donations during high-intensity gameplay, suddenly let go of her mouse. Her character, the powerful mage Frieren, stood still in the middle of the "lane" and was promptly obliterated by the enemy team.
Penny didn’t scream. She didn’t laugh. Her eyes went wide, her mouth parting in a small 'o' of surprise."
Wait... BIG Q?" she whispered. Her face, usually a mask of rehearsed cheer, flushed a deep, genuine pink. "Is that really you? Oh my god! Hi! I—I didn't think you’d actually show up! How are you?"
Jasper sat bolt upright, his sarcasm vanishing instantly. What?
The chat was moving too fast to read, but he kept his eyes on the "BIG_Q" account. He clicked the profile. Created yesterday. Zero followers. Zero hours watched. This was a nobody. A ghost.
BIG_Q: I’m good. You look hot in that outfit, but your League game is trash. Play something better.
Jasper’s blood boiled. "Who does this guy think he is?" he hissed. Penny didn't take requests. She had a rigid schedule. She’d banned people for less than calling her gameplay "trash."
"Haha, you’re so mean, Q!" Penny giggled—a sound Jasper had never heard before. It wasn't her "streamer giggle," the high-pitched "tee-hee" she used for the masses. This was a throaty, nervous laugh. "Okay, fine. You caught me. What should we play instead? I’ll do whatever you want.
"Jasper’s jaw literally dropped. He felt a sickening lurch in his stomach. He’d donated five hundred dollars once just to get her to play a ten-minute indie horror game, and she’d turned him down saying it "didn't fit her brand.
"BIG_Q: Put on Counter-Strike. But only because it’s made in our neck of the woods. Keep it local.
Penny leaned into the mic, her eyes sparkling. "Oh my god, I forgot you knew that! Yeah, the devs are practically my neighbors. I could probably walk to their office if I wasn't so lazy.
"Jasper froze. He lived in a suburb of Seattle. His university was a mere ten kilometers from the Valve headquarters. Penny had always been extremely secretive about her location, hinting she lived in SoCal or maybe Vancouver to throw off stalkers. But here she was, admitting her location to some random with a brand-new account.
Without thinking, driven by a **** need to reclaim his status, to prove he belonged in her inner circle, Jasper typed frantically into the chat.
Jasper_Reed88: No way! I knew it! I live in Seattle too, Penny! We should totally grab a coffee at the place near the Valve office! I’m so close!
The moment he hit enter, he felt a rush of adrenaline. He’d said it. He’d breached the wall.
Then, the screen flickered.
A giant, red box appeared in the center of his chat window.[SYSTEM MESSAGE]: YOU HAVE BEEN TEMPORARILY BANNED FROM PIXEL_QUEST’S CHANNEL. REASON: VIOLATION OF PRIVACY POLICY (DOXXING/LOCATION SHARING). DURATION: 5 DAYS.
"Wait, what?" Jasper yelled, slamming his fist onto his desk. The clean rows of pens rattled. "No! I was just—she just said it! She said it first!
"He looked at the stream, his heart hammering in his ears. Penny wasn't looking at the ban logs. She was too busy laughing at something BIG_Q had typed.
"You're right, Q," Penny said, her voice dropping to a playful, intimate murmur. "The locals really are the worst. Always trying to overstep, you know? Anyway, let's get into some CS... if you promise to carry me.
"Jasper stared at the screen, his access to the community he’d spent a fortune building stripped away in an instant. The five-day ban felt like a **** sentence. But more than the ban, it was the name. BIG_Q.
He pushed back from his desk, his breathing heavy. The silence of the fraternity house suddenly felt oppressive again, but this time, it felt sinister. He thought about the name. Q.
In the Sigma Epsilon Xi , there was only one person who went by a name like that. But it couldn't be her. Quinn was... Quinn was a freak. She wasn't a high-rolling streamer-slayer.
Jasper looked at his monitor, at Penny's blushing face as she started up a new game for a stranger.
"That bitch," Jasper spat, though he wasn't sure if he meant Penny or the mysterious BIG_Q. "That absolute bitch."
