She rolled her eyes, but it was a performance—they both knew what was coming.

“So? I’m here?” she said, more frustrated than scared now, her body buzzing on autopilot.

“You have a good weekend? Honornin’ the good reverend King?” He chuckled before continuing. “I’d love yous to show me how you might REALLY celebrate his achievements.”

“Oh yeah? And how would we honor his achievements today?” Leah asked with a huff of disdain as she crossed her arms as if that would protect her from his leering.

“Figured we could honor the man by, you know.” He mimed a blowjob with his tongue in his cheek, then cackled at his own joke. “Show me you believe in integration, teach.”

Leah glared at him, but the threat was never far away: his phone an email to Jonathan or the Board of Education she couldn’t let get out. She considered telling him to fuck off, but the risk calculus was always the same.

“You’re a real pioneer, you know that?” she deadpanned.
