Chapter 3 by magictcg magictcg

What's next?

Jamie's mistake

You stand in the cramped back room of After Hours Video, surrounded by cardboard boxes filled with worthless blank DVDs. The harsh fluorescent light flickers overhead, casting an unflattering glow across the dusty shelves lined with inventory. The air smells faintly of cardboard and desperation.

"We're so screwed," says Jamie Keller, running their fingers through disheveled brown hair. "Dad's going to kill me and fire you. There's no way we can afford to replace all this inventory." Jamie's voice has an edge of panic that makes you realize just how precarious your position.

As you pick up one of the empty DVD cases, examining its glossy cover promising content that doesn't exist, Jamie continues pacing. Their nervous energy fills the small room as they chew anxiously at a fingernail.

"You don't understand, Tyler. Dad's been looking for an excuse to shut this place down anyway. Says it's not profitable anymore with all the free stuff online." Jamie stops, looking at you with sudden intensity. "But I need this job. It's the only thing keeping me from having to move back home and go to that business school he's always pushing on me."

Jamie leans against a stack of boxes, shoulders slumping. "Maybe we could... I don't know, make our own videos? People do amateur stuff all the time now." Their voice drops to a near whisper, a flush spreading across their cheeks. "I know some people who might help. Friends from college who are always up for... adventures."

You notice Jamie's gaze lingering on you, assessing. There's something calculating behind their initial panic, as if they're already considering how you might fit into a solution.

"Or we could just own up to it," Jamie says, but without conviction. "Tell Dad the truth and take the hit."

The store bell chimes from the front, signaling a customer. Jamie straightens up immediately. "Think about it, Tyler. We've got two weeks before Dad's inventory check. That's fourteen days to figure something out, or we're both screwed." They head toward the door but pause. "Don't worry though I've got connections. Between your... well, whatever skills you bring, and my network, we might just pull this off."

As Jamie leaves to attend to the customer, you're left alone with the boxes of empty DVDs and a decision to make. The weight of your precarious financial situation settles heavily on your shoulders. Rent is due in ten days, and jobs in this town are scarce. You need this position, humiliating as it might be to admit.

How should you fix this?
