Chapter 38
by Bengates
Prompt: Continue the scene, use more dialogue, show don't tell. Dana is angry with Jake and storms off. Sarah comforts Amy. Sarah begs Jake to help, Jake owes her.
Jake reveals his true feelings about others.
Jake steps forward, his eyes narrowing as Dana calls him a monster. He can feel the anger and fear radiating off of her, but he doesn't flinch or back down. "Maybe I am a monster," he growls, his voice low and menacing. "But you're alive, aren't you? Your loved ones are alive, because of what I did."
Dana glares at him, her fists clenched at her sides. "You destroyed our homes, our families. You're a monster and one day I'll be strong enough to defeat monsters like you."
She storms off, leaving Sarah standing there, watching her go. For a moment, Sarah considers following her, but then Jake steps forward, stopping her. "Give her some time," he says, his voice softer now. "She needs to be alone."
Sarah nods, her attention then drawn to Amy, who is a crying mess. She moves to comfort her, wrapping her arms around the girl as she sobs. It breaks Sarah's heart to see her like this, to see the devastation that Jake's actions have wrought.
She turns to Jake, her eyes pleading with him. "You have to help them, Jake. You have to fix this. You used me to do this, and now I have blood on my hands too."
Jake snarls, shaking his head. "I don't care about them," he says, his voice hard. "They're nothing to me."
Jake looks at Sarah with a sullen expression as she confronts him for his indifference, her anger is palpable as she confronts him.
"You can't just leave these people to suffer!" Sarah shouts at Jake. "You owe it to them, and to me, to help. You have no idea what it's like to be helpless, to have everything you care about destroyed. You don't care about anything, do you?"
Jake shrugs. "Why should I? They're just meaningless lives, and I'm not sorry for what I did. I don't care about you either,” he lied, “One day I’ll leave you too."
Sarah clenches her fists in frustration, feeling angry and helpless. She knows deep down that Jake must have some feelings, some sense of responsibility, but his indifference is infuriating. "You're being over-dramatic," she says. "You do care, deep down, and I believe that. But even if you don't, we have to help these people."
Prompt: Jake gives in and calls on the moon goddess to help. She helps but is displeased that Jake is so calous, like his father, Fenrir, and punishes him.
