Chapter 9

Yes, Sagus. How?
It was one of his spells.
He turned to her and smiled a guilty smile.
"I kind of...read your mind."
"Wait, wait, wait! So, Marianne can raise and control the dead, Sagus can read minds. Sophie, do you have any hidden talents?"
"I was about to ask you the same."
"You did, Sagus? You read me?"
"Yes. Are you angry with me?"
She thought for a moment. "I am, but I forgive you. Why did you do it?"
Sagus took a deep breath. "Remember two months ago when we fought the trio of dark mages? How after we killed them you would cry for weeks afterward, and when one of us would ask why, you wouldn't tell."
"Yes?"
"Well, eventually, your non-answers weren't enough for me, so I read you to see if I could help you with it. I did it for a good reason. I did it to help you. But while I read you, I found out that you cried because the souls of those mages were haunting you. I exorcised them while you were asleep, so you wouldn't realize I knew about you. I'm sorry."
"You're sorry?" She ran to him and hugged him, leaving her feet briefly. "You saved my soul, Sagus! If you hadn't exorcised them, they would have devoured my spirit and mind. I owe you more than my life. I can never re-pay what you've done for me, but I will try as long as i live to do so. Thank you!"
The hug went on for several minutes, until Rebecca couldn't wait any more.
"I hate to interrupt this beautiful moment between school children with crushes, but I must know. Sagus, have you ever read me or Sophie?" Sagus smiled that same guilty smile at her.
"Yes. Um....to both?"
Rebecca drew her bow, but Sophie held it down so it didn't rise above foot-level. She calmed down some when Sagus spun around so Marianne was behind him when he saw what she was about to do. He knew she wouldn't shoot him, but just in case...
"What did you see in us, Sagus?"
"Nothing important. Mostly I just confirmed what you both told me when we first met. Can't be too careful." Sophie was relieved, but Rebecca was not.
"Anything else?!"
"Uh....heh-heh...memories of yourselves........nude..." Marianne let go and Sophie let Rebecca raise her bow. She pulled the trigger halfway back before sighing and lowering it.
"And WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!"
"I...have no excuse." He hung his head.
"Did you ever do that to me?" Marianne demanded.
"No, of course not! I respect you too much."
"And you don't respect us?" Sophie asked, slightly hurt.
"It's not that! I couldn't resist. You're both just so beautiful."
"I'm not beautiful?!"
"Well, I....uh...."
Through clenched teeth, Rebecca said "Let's bury this thing and get going."
After the burial...
