Because he stayed after school, Matt has missed the bus. He headed for Hawthorn and stuck his thumb out.

It was a hot day and the line of air conditioned luxury sedans and SUVs whizzing by him was truly depressing. It would be nice if he had enough money to grab an Uber. Of course, while he was wishing, he might as well wish for enough money to hire a personal limo. Neither seemed likely to happen.

If worse came to worst, his mom would get home from work around six thirty and he could call her to pick him up. But surely someone would pick him up before then. He hoped.
