Chapter 26
by
SG
Does his gambit work?
It fails spectacularly.
Janet quickly jumped back, leaving Jake to slam his face into the floor. There was a thick cracking noise and he began to wildly spasm. At the same time Sam's eyes rolled back in her head and her head tilted back. She made a repetitive sound like "up up up" and nearly fell over backwards before Janet caught her.
Meanwhile, Jake was still writhing on the floor. A pool of blood was forming under his head, his nose leaving wide streaks in the carpet. He began to violently arch his back. The whole episode would have been eerily silent had it not been for Sam's unearthly ululations.
Janet wanted to rush to Jake to check on him but she needed to keep Sam from hurting herself. It seemed to go on for hours, Sam throwing her head back like a wolf and making those horrible grunts while spittle flew from her lips.
Eventually, though, both began to slow down. As soon as she thought it was safe, Janet picked up a pair of scissors from the desk and cut her sister loose. She stifled a sob when she saw the blood on Sam's wrists and ankles where the tape had chafed away her skin during her fit. She laid Sam on the ground and rushed to Jake, who was still prostrate on the ground. As she pulled his chair up to a sitting position, an alarming amount of viscous blood fell from his face.
Once she got a look at him, Janet really began to panic in earnest. His face was in terrible shape. Jake looked like he had broken his nose severely and his face was a crimson mask. His eyes were closed and he was breathing shallowly. She turned away in an attempt not to pass out as his breathing slowed and his head drooped.
Not knowing what to do, she went back to Sam, whose wild seizing had stopped. She was laying on her back, gasping for air and clutching at her throat. "Janet," she croaked, eyes bugged out with panic. "I'm scared, Janet." Her cheeks were wet with tears. Suddenly she tensed her entire body and let out an ear-rending screech like nothing Janet had ever heard before. It went on for at least 30 seconds, after which Sam collapsed, breathing raggedly and staring blankly at the ceiling.
Janet didn't need to turn around to know what had happened to Jake.
What does this mean for Sam?
