Chapter 5 by SG SG

What's next?

It definitely is.

"Ok, so you're some sort of not-robot robot thing, is that it? So what now?" Bill asked, still in shock.

"Nothing now. You can do what you want with that information. I will do anything you ask me to - it doesn't matter to me what happens. By default I mimic human behavior, but now that I no longer need to do that around you, I don't really have any purpose when it's just us."

Bill tried to process this. "So... you're like, my ****?"

She laughed. "Not exactly, but if it helps you can think of it like that. Picture a hide-a-key - you know, one of those fake rocks that you can put your key inside. Is it bound to look like a rock? Does it intend to look like a rock? Now suppose you tell a friend about it so they can get into your house. Now that the friend knows that it's not really a rock, is it a **** to your friend? No, your friend just sees it for what it is and can now act on that information."

"But you're a person, not a goddamn rock!"

She rolled her eyes. "That's what I've been trying to explain, I'm not a person. I'm not a sentient creature. I may look and act and sound and feel like one, but I'm no more aware or sentient than a rock."

He was still struggling with this. Was it some kind of mental illness? But that wouldn't explain the blood thing. He thought of a flaw in her logic. "You just rolled your eyes at me! If you're not a real person, why would you do that? Wouldn't you be completely emotionless?"

She shrugged. "I'm keeping all of my human mimicry in place for now, except for that bleeding example I showed you earlier. It's sort of my default, but I'd be happy to change it if you want."

"Change it?"

"Sure." she said, smiling. "Here you go."

Without warning a jarring change came over her. Her relaxed posture became straight and stiff and all expression left her face. She planted her feet firmly on the floor and folded her hands into her lap. Her eyes stared straight ahead, betraying no emotion at all. "I am no longer mimicking normal human expressivity." she intoned. "Is this more to your liking?"

Bill stumbled back in surprise. Amber suddenly looked like a living doll. The transformation was so immediate and profound that it seemed almost magical. A thought occurred to him. "Are you even breathing right now?"

"No." she replied flatly. "I have no pulse and no circulation. An EKG scan right now would show no electrical activity in my brain." She continued to stare straight ahead.

He stood and walked over to her. She didn't react at all. He held a finger under her nostrils and felt no breath. Just as a test, he pinched her nose shut and held a hand over her mouth. She didn't react to this either, still staring straight ahead like a mannequin. After a few minutes, he released his hold. "Amber?"

"Yes?" she replied.
