It began

Tommy left for his dad's place that afternoon. Earlier that day we discussed our plans of moving into a college dorm in a couple of months and on top of the world.

A few hours after he left I realized I forgot my phone at his house. Tommy always left in a hurry with the excuse of his dad getting pissed if he was late. Also, I crashed after he departed and took a well needed nap due to all the late night summer parties.

It was twilight and I didn't think anything of the timing. Rather, I just wanted to check my text messages. I knocked and didn't get a response. Well shit, I thought. I tried the door, locked. Well double shit. Tommy had a first story bedroom and I knew his window was always unlocked based on many late night video game hangouts unbeknownst to our parents.

I furtively snuck around to the side of the house and tried the window after popping out the screen. Success! It slid upwards without a sound. With practiced movements I climbed into Tommy's room. It was almost dark now as I groped along his bedroom.

Crash!

A cup full of pencils and pens fell off Tommy's desk and clattered to the floor.

"Shit!" I exclaimed as I reached for his desk light and flipped it on.

My phone sat face down on his desk where I left it. I picked it up and began picking up the mess I made. I froze as the door knob twisted and the door opened.

"Jake? What are you doing here?" Tommy's mom frantically inquired.

It had been a few years since she and Tommy moved into my neighborhood. Her beautiful face and knockout body still gave me pause every time.

Tommy's mom dashed off without an explanation.
