It’s a Date

“My wife,” the lovely Jasmine Brown said through clenched teeth, “she’ll be at home tonight. I’m not ready to tell her about this, about us.”

“Wait, hold on, you’re married? And gay?” You are taken aback, “I admit, I’ve been crushing on you for a long time, but I’m not interested in breaking up a marriage.”

“No! Please!” Jasmine’s face instantly switched to a look of desperation. She leaned across the counter and grabbed your hands, “I can’t explain it, but something’s changed. The way I feel about you, it’s so much bigger than I’ve ever felt before.”

“So you’re suddenly into guys and you want to take one for a spin? Is that it?”

“It’s nothing like that. I’m a lesbian! As long as I can remember I’ve only ever been attracted to women. Even now, when I think about men, I feel nothing. Except for you,” her eyes lost their **** look and suddenly took on a doe-eyed quality, “you are just so… handsome? I’m so sorry, but this is all new to me. I don’t even really know how to talk to men this way, but when I look at you…”

“Is this some kind of prank?” You cut her off.

“I think I love you!” Jasmine blurted. She took a deep breath, “There. I’ve said it. That feels good to get off my chest.”

You stared at the beautiful librarian for a few seconds in disbelief. Loved you? She hardly knew you! “But what about your wife?” You questioned.

“Oh, there’s no way she’d understand. I love her too, but not like I love you. She’s going to think that I’m a traitor, that I lied to her, betrayed who I am. All my lesbian friends will be the same. They’re all going to hate me, and it’s going to be terrible, but as long as I have you, I think it’ll be worth it.”

Jasmine smiled a million dollar smile at you, though her eyes were sad. If what she was saying was true, she had a lot to process.

“Erica,” Jasmine said over her shoulder to the woman working in a computer terminal in a back room, “can you cover the front? I need to help a patron with something.”

“Sure thing!” A plump, middle-aged woman said as she came to the front.

Jasmine walked around the counter and told you, “Right this way, sir.”

You followed her as she leads you out of the library and around the side of the building to a shaded spot with a picnic table. She sat down and you sat next to her, still in disbelief that any of this was happening.

“How about this: Why don’t we meet somewhere? I haven’t dated in so long, and I’ve never done it with a man before. What do, um, hetero couples do on dates?”

“Probably the same as lesbian couples,” you guess, “something to get to know each other.”

“Okay, sorry I’m just really nervous. This is a big change, and I have to tell you I’m not entirely comfortable with it, but I’m committed.”

“I’m kind of weirded out myself,” you said, “and really not comfortable being a homewrecker.”

“You won’t be,” she said quickly, placing a hand on your knee, “I just won’t tell her. Unless you want me to. Ugh! This is just so confusing!”

“Dinner, tonight,” you said, getting things back on track, “let’s meet at seven. Mario’s downtown?”

“That’s perfect.” She said, again staring at you with puppy dog eyes.

You stood up to leave. She stood too. Tentatively she slipped her hand into yours as you walked back around the library, but slipped it out when in view of the library doors.

As you parted, you for your car, her for her job, she called out to you. “See you tonight! Love you!”

You turned, just in time to see a beet red Jasmine Brown darting inside the building. What had you gotten yourself into?
