It's obvious.

Laying beside Karlova, Diane thought about that mole. It was so familiar... but it couldn't be her.

"That mole you have," she said abruptly. No reason to mince words. "Are you Alex?"

Karlova grinned and blushed. "Busted!"

"How- holy shit, you're so old!" Diane at up and stared at Karlova. It was obvious now; the narrow nose, the soft brown eyes, those dimples...

"Thanks," Alex said sarcastically. "You know, you probably would have looked worse than this at my age."

"Would have?" Diane asked and immediately her mind was flooded with memories. Her eyes widened as she saw arguments and shopping lists and awkward office parties. Spaghetti, candlelit sex, movies. Long conversations, doctors, a little boy. The goofiest grin she'd ever seen, a swell of love. Tears, a decision.

"Alex." It was an accusation. "You... you brought me back? As, what, your ****?"

Alex protested. "No, no, not a ****! I just... I missed you, sweetie."

Diane was aghast. "So you made this... thing turn into me? You took some awful golem thing and shaped it like your wife? What, am I supposed to fuck you now? I- wait!" Her face contorted. "No! Wait! Are you fucking with me? Are you fucking changing me? Christ, Alex, stop!"

Alex stopped. Diane stared at her, terrified. "What are you doing to me?" she whispered.

"I'm sorry, Diane," Alex said tearfully. "You were always so analytical. I loved that about you. So whenever I get an image of you in my head, the image starts to pick at itself. Point out the little things I got wrong, correct little mistakes. It's fucking exhausting."

Diane's expression changed to one of childlike curiosity. She stared at her hands. "I don't care anymore," she said, then looked up at Alex. "I really don't. All of a sudden it just... doesn't bother me."

Alex leaned forward. "What doesn't?"

"Any of it. I fucking _died, _Alex. I'm gone and I don't even remember dying. Why can't I remember it?" Her voice had lost all malice; she was genuinely curious. "Is it because you can't remember it? Because you weren't there?"

Alex winced at the unintended accusation, but Diane continued. "Wait. I- I do remember it! But you weren't there. Do you just want me to remember? How many of the memories in my head are even real? Is this even my apartment?"

Alex put a finger to Diane's lips and she was silent. She blinked with surprise, then her eyes swam out of focus and her face relaxed. A subtle change overtook Diane; her nose shortened slightly and her skin cleared. Her chest swelled, her waist shrank, her chin receded, a thousand other tiny changes happened in the blink of an eye and suddenly she was gorgeous. Still recognizably Diane, just the hottest version of her.

"You made me stop asking," she said with a gentle smile. "You made me better."

"I did."

"And I feel better," Diane said as she ran her hands along her toned, slender arms. "I feel good. I can't remember what I was so curious about before, but I know it doesn't matter. What matters is you and me."

A tear ran down Alex's cheek and Diane wiped it away.
