It's not as straightforward as they'd like

After getting cleaned up, Helen and Jess made their way over to Jess's flat. Apparently unable to extricate herself from Adam's body, Jess powered ahead, walking swiftly up the street. Helen lagged behind, struggling to keep up with her friend's long strides.

"Jess!" Helen called out, panting as she tried to catch up. "I know you're as excited as I am, but can we slow down please?"

Jess paused and turned to face her friend. "Oh, sorry," she said, blushing slightly. "I guess I'm not used to how quickly I can walk now."

Helen let out a small chuckle. "Adam is pretty fit, isn't he?"

"He is," Jess said, smiling. "I'm starting to see why you like him so much."

The pair arrived at the building which housed Jess's flat and made their way upstairs after Jess entered the pin for the main door. As they reached the front door of the flat, Jess paused, a look of panic spreading across her face.

"What is it?" Helen asked, sensing something was wrong.

"My keys," Jess replied. "They're inside the flat with my body."

"Shit," Helen muttered. "You'll have to try and leave Adam's body. That way you can pass through the door and get back to your body, right?"

Jess nodded, not feeling very confident. "Okay, I'll give it a try."

Jess closed her eyes and concentrated on trying to leave Adam's body. She imagined her spirit flowing out of him and into the room. She waited, but nothing happened.

"Anything?" Helen asked.

"Nope," Jess said.

"Try harder."

Jess furrowed her brow and clenched her jaw. Maybe she had to really visualise herself leaving Adam's body? She focused her mind and tried to imagine what that would look like. Her vision swam, and she felt as though she were spinning. She swayed on the spot, and her head felt light.

"Woah," Helen said, steadying her friend. "I think you're about to do it."

Jess tried to speak, but no words came out. She felt as though she were floating in the air, and then suddenly she felt as though she was falling. Her vision cleared and she found herself looking down at her petite friend crushed by the lifeless body of Adam.

"Oh my god, are you okay?!" Jess asked, floating down to Helen's side as she tried to get Adam's body off her.

"I'm fine," Helen replied, a little breathless. "Just get back into your body so you can open the door."

"Okay, okay," Jess said, calming down. She phased through her front door and down her hallway towards her messy living room. Slumped in the sofa was her body, her mouth wide open and her eyes blankly staring at the ceiling. "I look dead," Jess said, shuddering.

Without a second thought, Jess plunged into her body. A jolt of energy surged through her, and her eyes opened wide. The **** of her spirit entering her body caused her to flail, and she rolled onto the floor, knocking painfully into the coffee table.

"Oww," Jess groaned, rubbing her hip. She stood up and staggered a little. Her body felt incredibly achy and heavy, as if she were waking up with a hangover. "I must have been laying awkwardly or something," she sighed as she gingerly made her way over to the front door.

Opening the door, Jess was greeted by a worried-looking Helen. "Everything okay? It sounded like you fell over or something."

"Yeah, I'm fine," Jess replied, rubbing her hip. "Just slipped off the sofa when I re-entered my body. I see you managed to get Adam sitting up."

Helen looked over her shoulder and shrugged. "It wasn't easy, he's a heavy bugger. Can you help me get him inside?"

The pair each took one of Adam's arms and dragged him through the front door. Jess closed the door behind them and then together they pulled Adam's body towards the living room.

"This is a bit weird," Helen panted. "It's like we're dragging a corpse. Wait! Why didn't he wake up when you left his body?"

"I don't think so," Jess said, shaking her head.

"You're not sure if he's still alive?" Helen's voice began to rise in panic.

"No, no," Jess said, laughing nervously. "When he bumped into me and I accidentally took over his body, I remember feeling his mind sort of... go to sleep." She placed two fingers on Adam's neck and immediately felt a steady pulse. "See! He's alive," Jess declared trying not to sound too relieved. "Maybe the spellbook will have some information?"

"Yes, yes," Helen said, her expression brightening. "Good idea."

After resting Adam's body up against the sofa, the two young women settled down to read the spellbook. It was helpfully left on the page detailing the Astral Protection spell. Jess pointed to the magic words that had enabled her to leave her body as a spirit, and Helen's eyes widened.

"This is amazing," she gasped.

"It is," Jess agreed. "But I'm not seeing anything about waking someone who has been previously possessed."

"Maybe it's on another page?"

"Perhaps, let me see," Jess said, carefully flipping through the pages of the spellbook.

"Wait, go back," Helen urged.

Jess flipped back a couple of pages and the pair read the words together. "Substitute soul spell," Jess read out loud. "It seems like it's more for animating your body once you've used the Astral Protection spell, there's nothing here about waking up."

Helen sighed, and the two sat in silence, lost in their thoughts. After a few moments, Helen perked up and pointed at the spellbook. "One of use could take over Adam's body and then try and wake him."

"That could work," Jess said, nodding her head. "And we could use this substitute soul spell to animate our vacant body whilst we do it."

"Sounds like a plan," Helen said, clapping her hands. "But who's going to try and wake Adam?"

Jess looked at her friend with a wicked smile. "Let's rock, paper, scissors for it."

"Fine," Helen giggled, "but it should be me really since you've already used Adam's body."
